Default removing and protecting against rust in water pumps

Hi, I recently bought a Flint and Walling Hoosier water pump and noticed some rust and I decided to see how far the rabbit hole went and discovered some serious flaking internal rust. I want to try to preserve this pump while still making it functional. I thought maybe removing the internal rust and then using a rust encapsulator but not sure how that would fair with water. Any tips or ideas on how to go about this?

Have had good luck sandblasting internal parts & coating with epoxy.

Once you sandblast the scale and rust away you can try sealing the cast iron with Glyptal insulating varnish. Once cured in an oven it is pretty much impenetrable. Several big name diesel engine manufacturers like Buda and Murphy used to seal the water jackets of their engines with Glyptal.
