Default Nelson Bros. Jumbo ?'s

A friend of mine had a man bring him a Nelson Bros. engine to finish putting together and get it running. The owner says this engine was bought new by his Grandfather. He thinks it's a 4 hp? The tag on front of hopper just says "The Jumbo Line" and Type DA and ser. number. Cast into the top of the hopper is DA-5. The bore roughly measures 4-7/8" just using a tape measure. So what HP does he have or do I need to get some more info. from the engine? The owner has done a nice job of honing and had new brass bearings made, etc. The engine is ready to put back and run with one exception. The owner has somehow over the years lost the piston It was taken apart many years ago and somehow it has disappeared. We need to determine the size it will help us in searching for a replacement.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
P.T Legare in Quebec,Canada used to rebadge the Nelson Brothers Jumbo engines as the "Essex". I had an Essex once and it was rated at 5 hp. The hopper had DA-5 cast into it. I have seen a couple of others like that too and have always assumed the 5 on the hopper meant you had a 5 hp.

We were leaning more toward it being a 5 hp also. It looks too big to be a 4 hp. Now to find a suitable piston. A little bigger than 4-7/8" will work as we can turn it down to fit the bore. We're using a piston out of a 6 hp Fairbanks to replace the one in my 5 hp Ottawa. It was also 4-7/8".
