with the heads off i buffed the cylinders with the hone and then had to build a bar starter for this engine. the one i made 30 years ago does not fix this engine so now i have one for the ud-16 and td-18 engines.
to prove a point i put a pipe wrench on the drive shaft on the motor then bounced my weight on the pipe and nothing happened. put the same pipe on the bar starter and with one hand i was able to get the engine free.

once the engine was free enough that i didn't have to use the bar. i screwed in some studs in the starter bolt holes then just slid the bar starter back for the next rotation. the cylinder walls cleaned up pretty good and now i just have to figure out the live shaft coming out of the clutch. hope i don't have to pull the motor out like a 12 cat grader, lol.

Do you lock up the drive so you can rock it both directions? Can't tell from the pics.

i disconnected the drive shaft from the clutch to the main gear box because i didn't want anything hanging up or causing problems due to the fact they have not been checked over. to recover the machine, we had to remove the drive chains so it would move.

thansk, i miss understood what he was asking. yes the bendix is welded solid in the engaged position. you need to rock the crank back and forth and the blow gun to get rid of the rust and dirt. this keeps it from locking up. also use the cylinder hone if the pistons go down and clean the cylinder walls good and lots of lube for when they come back up.

last night was a relaxing evening on the 550 adams grader. change the filters and installed the new rad hoses. i made sure to get the 4 ply 2 3/8" diameter hoses. every one uses the 2 1/4' hose and they leak.

also on my website there is a page on the bar starter too.

Did you get anew head gasket or use the old one. How was the head? Bill H.

i don't like spending big money on my cats or equipment because i do high risk adventures with them. back when i was young and foolish, i did a complete head and valve job on the red crane cat which was about $1100.00 in parts not including my labour and time about. i took the cat out and it fell through the ice and that was the end of that well spent money. most of my cat have been recovered seized and up and running with just re-using the head gasket with prematex avation gasket maker. the trick is to let it set for about a week before adding any liquids and over torque the bolts by 10 more pounds.

my equipment maybe old but it does the work needed under the harsh conditions of winter. i hardly use the equipment in the summer.

I like that bar starter idea. Never thought of that before. I cut a square hole in the housing of a UD6 over the flywheel and got in there with a large wrecking bar and got it turning. It pushed one of the dry sleavs out.

yes that would work too in cutting a hole. once the cylinders have been soaked enough then it is easy to break free.

Any plans to remove the pistons to loosen up the rings?

no, i'll get the engine running and see what happens from there. the engine might have a bottom end knock or something so it is best to check it out first before tossing money at the machine.

the name tags have the following info

Adams 550 grader serial # 3307

UD-16 engine # UDCM-9609
UD-16 chassis # UDC-8771

any idea of the year this might be??

The UD16 was only built 1948 to 54 so that narrows it down some. I think yours is one of the later ones as the parts books shows after #3000 as the new series. Also IH had a habit of starting there serial numbers at 501, so your engine #s are some what later too.

on the 550 adams grader, they run the live shaft through the u-joints. i think these u-joints will be obsolete, lol.

I would bet they are still a currant item, the challenge will be to find a newer application. There is a very obliging place in Regina called Motion Industries. Send them pictures and measurements It would surprize me if they can't help. I think the make of those joints is Mechanix.

yes IH engines were known for one side being gas and other side being diesel. use gas to start and then switch to diesel, very good system when everything works ok, lol.
