I tried looking it up on Wikipedia but all I found there was a description of the movie where it refered to it as a wrecked racing motorcar that the kids grew fond of and implored their father to buy it before it was scrapped.

Seems like I remember reading several years ago (I think when the movie car was being sold at auction) that the car was custom built for the movie and didn't start out as a "real" car. I think they actually built 3 or 4 cars for different uses in the movie. There was one primary car though that Van Dyke drove (which was the one being sold at auction). If my memory is correct it had a small Ford engine and transmission in it.

they had one of the cars here last year when Dick came back to his hometown to kick off restoring his childhood home...looked custom to me. My wifes grandmother babysit Dick and Jerry, she said Jerrys comedy came from his dad (he was really funny). Gene Hackmen was also a childhood friend of theirs.
