Default To Be or Not to Be......a Subscriber

Perhaps some of you have noticed that your name has changed color. Harry has been going through the membership lists and updating the status. I was horrified to learn that Stak only has 376 PAID Subscribers?

I'm curious why more folks don't have Stak Membership on their Christmas list of priorities.....

Obviously, I find the site worth the hassle and my $20. Sincere THANK YOU to those who have joined me.

Thanks
Beth

Same here!!! I found this site with all the info worth at least a being a sponsor.. Most out there are a lot smarter than me so it is worth that much in just the company I keep!!! Hopefully some of it I will retain.

I have in the past and will do again tonight. Harry, would you consider a "life" membership?

I had used this site many times before sending in to be a subscriber, that has to be one of the best things I have ever done! I haven't renewed my subscription to GEM because I find more interesting items on here than I ever found in the NEW GEM! THANKS for creating such a great site Harry!

I am a paying subscriber.

I have learned A LOT here.

My main complaint is the image size and restrictions on photos.

I have thought many times about starting a thread on this very subject. Darn cheap entertainment. Thank you Beth, and thank you for taking your time to be a moderator!

We need these threads once in a while to remind us to get caught up!

There are realities not reflected in the poll. Such as being out of work, bad economy, financial issues, health or family costs, etc, etc. They may have let EE and GEM go as well.

I am not complaining, doing fine myself, just saying some folks might not need it rubbed in their faces. Christmas was mentioned. The tone does not come across very Christmas like to me.

The photo benefit is wonderful.

I am fine with the flashing Ads, because it is for a good cause.

As for the edits, I take pride in my posting and yet being human I make mistakes. Does it bother Harry or the memberhsip that the forum looks messy? Beyond the typos, I also have the occasional brain fart. I can always post a retraction in that case. That all detracts from the website.

I have some limited success with the classifieds. There might be an opportunity to collect a fee? Perhaps, when you change the status to sold, you are asked/remined to remit a buck via what ever payment method available. Click this button to print a paper bill or another button for an electronic option?

Glad to be a sponsor. IMHO, ' Stak is the best thing on the internet. Without a doubt, it is the best thing to happen to the old iron hobbies since Reverend Elmer Ritzman started what became Iron Men Album. Thanks, Harry

At the risk of being being crass, probably because you don't have to.

I lurked around for years, even posting our local shows in the "Calender Events" section, without subscribing. A couple of years ago, after reading a thread on the subject, I had a revelation and decided that I should subscribe. There are always circumstances where someone is a "little short". Also, people's interests change, and sadly some become too ill, or old, to be a subscriber on SmokStak anymore. Some worse.

As far as the 376 subscribers, that's only $7500 and some change. Beth, I don't know if you counted the Banner Sponsors and other larger donors, in the 376, but the cash gleaned from this site, annually, couldn't much exceed 10 grand. It has to be a labor of love.

Also, there are you guys, moderators. Couldn't imagine how much it would cost if you guys weren't volunteers. Once again...A labor of love. OK, I'm through now.

Craig, Is there anyway to post this thread on other forums, so all can participate?

The cheapest thing I do in this hobby !!! I have learned a lot and met a lot of great folks in the steam hobby, I might have never met otherwise. Also was a great help restoring our 6 h.p. Russell traction engine and by using the PM I was able to ask my dumb questions among a selected bunch of friends!!!! Plus where ever I am in the world I can log in. ---------------------------------------------------TWD

I found this site a while back and enjoy it.
But I must admit I am rather ignorant on the cost of running websites and such.I have no idea what it cost or what effort is involved. And I am sure I aint the only 1.

It might help to give some basic info as far as what is involved, cost and labor wise, in running a website.Perhaps more folks that are able to would send in funds and help, once they see how it is used .
If the actual fiqures are something that needs to be kept private, use examples. Like,Server cost around X per month.
just a thought.

Congratulations! You get to be GREEN instead of orange/yellow now!

As soon as Harry gets you upgraded, an "EDIT" button will appear for you to make corrections or add more thoughts.

Peter,

The poll/thread isn't intended to offend, only provide some facts and a perhaps a reminder since Harry doesn't send an invoice. Given the large number who view this site, I was shocked so few had subscribed. Subscription is voluntary.

The Moderators pay their $20 just like the rest. Sincere appreciation to all who have renewed or upgraded.

Beth
