Default Antique Steel Wheeled Mechanical Plows...History, Weed Finds, Prices, Parts, Etc.

Have been wanting to start a thread about old plows that were so often used behind our favorite Lugged & Cleated antique tractors.
Vintage plowing practices have become an enjoyable subject for many of us these days and a thread devoted to helping each other find parts, technical information and model identification could prove to be quite useful.
Also I think it would be great fun to see pictures of what folks have been discovering in the weeds, saving from the scrap yards and putting back into service again.

Here are some photos of an Oliver four 16 rope-trip that works as good as it looks. A nice heavy built old piece that has stood the test of time very well. Although I have owned and enjoyed it for about three years now I do not know much about it. Could anyone identify it with model numbers and approximate year of manufacture?
Thanks in advance for any help on this!

The last photo is some of our group at 2013 plow days this last fall. I pulled the 4 bottom Oliver with my 1927 Allis E.
One of our plow day regulars was the late Bill Lewis who passed away just days before our annual meet. He was loved and will be missed so I made a sign that read "Plowing in memory of Bill Lewis - if there ain't no dirt in heaven you can show us how to plow clouds when we catch up to you"
Thats me next to the exhaust pipe.
Tony

Great thread Tony!

Tractors are great, but they are even better with an old plow or implement of some kind hooked on!

Here are a couple of GREAT resources for Deere plows-

David Wolfe - The Beda Company
Wrote and sells books and video's on plowing and specifically JD plows. Also makes some nice hard to find reproduction parts.
http://www.thebedacompany.com/index.htm
His book on ID'ing JD plows is a MUST have if you have any JD plows at all!
http://www.thebedacompany.com/the-jo...actor-plow.htm

Tyler the Plow Guy
Best source I have found for getting correct era plow parts! Have gotten numerous items from him and have always been VERY satisfied!
http://www.mrbtractors.com/home

Hope these sources can be as useful to others as they have been to me.

Tony, we agree with you and when weather allows, will take pics of some of our collection of plows. Thanks for the thread.

Thanks for the thread Tony!

Although im a 'city' kid I love turning dirt with old tractors.

Here are some pics of my favorite 'plow girl'. 1935 McCormick W-30. Shes all original and never been touched.....still has the non variable speed governor on it. She walks along pretty good with a 3-14 #8. The plow has been updated with Plow chief parts and everything is almost new and does and excellent job.

Heres a little bit newer one but its pretty odd so thought I would include it

Farmall 450LP with a model #314 Gold Demonstrator rollover plow. I opted to leave it original since it still has quite a bit of paint on it. If I can find a couple more pieces to put coulters on it, she's going down the furrow!

Scrapyard Alert
I just got a call from a friend who told me a two bottom John Deere plow came accross the scale at a local scrapyard here in south MN. It is a complete looking slat bottom on full steel. The owner of the yard set it aside for now and wants $225 for it.
It is located off exit 18 of Interstate 35 near the town of Clarks Grove. The yard is called I-35 Auto Recycling and is just NE of Clarks Grove on CR 45.
First come, first serve...I hope someone can save it!

Tony, Seeing your Oliver plows brings back memories of when I was a lot younger (1950s) and living in Sheboygan county Wisconsin, We had 2/12 Oliver plow and pulled with a WC AllisChalmers. Would like to have a 3/12 to pull behind my 1925 AllisChalmers (15-25) Roger Weinhold Acworth,Georgia aka Charlie 1924 that was my dads tractor

Hi Tony, great thread you opened! I am also a plow fanatic and has already restored some plows. My latest is a John Deere No-45-C, for behind my GP. Now I am restoring a John Deere No-4 with bottlecap wheel from about 1929. Parts for this aged plows are difficult and hard to find.
Does somebody have a No-4 parts plow for selling parts?

Thanks Gerrit

Nice JD plow Gerrit,
You have it in great condition.

Here is a hard to find JD plow I snooped out of the weeds recently. First two photos is how I found it in back of an old farmyard sunk into the dirt for many years.
Last two photos show how well it survived. It was in high ground with light dry soil and is in real good shape!
Nothing makes an old iron hound feel better than finding great old pieces of history like these and getting them home to our collections

This is one Massey Harris plow I am pretty happy to get. It is an early 1920's Massey Harris chain lift plow. The 11" width makes this one a little bit more unusual. The plow was sold and used since new with one of my Massey #2 tractors in Nova Scotia.

If anybody out there has one I need one moldboard for this plow so I can turn some dirt.

Here is another group of plow I have been collecting. I think these are very interesting so now I have managed to get three of them. These plows started out being made by J.I. Case Plow Works in the mid 20's and were continued by Massey after they bought out the Plow Works. The most interesting feature of these plows is the mechanical lift being on the furrow side instead of the normal industry standard of being on the land side. They are easy to pick out in a crowd.

The first is a 2 bottom Massey #3 plow. It was sold new in Pembina ND and sat on my friends family farm until I got it a few years ago.

Next is a J.I. Case plow work 3 bottom #3 plow. This one came from SD by way of Biewers Tractor Salvage. It is in pretty poor shape but some day it is going to plow.

Last one I have is a #4 Massey full 3 bottom. They #4 was the same as the #3 just a different number for the full 3 bottom and the 4 bottom. I don't have any good pictures of it for some reason.

I have only seen about 10 of these plows but I am always interested in finding more for my collection.

I guess this one is not on steel all the way around but it was our project this summer. It is an Oliver 100 Plowmaster. The first time we used it the Oliver plow and Wallis K combination worked fairly well plowing under some pasture land that had not been plowed since my Grandpa could remember and he has lived on this farm since 1935. It was almost like we were breaking virgin ground like when some of these tractors were new. Last photo is plowing the garden with an OK Wallis.
