I also have some parts for a #4 and a 44.

Here is a hard to find JD plow I snooped out of the weeds recently. First two photos is how I found it in back of an old farmyard sunk into the dirt for many years.
Last two photos show how well it survived. It was in high ground with light dry soil and is in real good shape!
Nothing makes an old iron hound feel better than finding great old pieces of history like these and getting them home to our collections

Tony, that is a nice one, do you know what the model is ?

Hello Pitalplace, my No-4 has a bottlecap wheel like that. what kind of parts do you have for the No-4?
I am looking for a kind of bracketlever fitted on the furrow side axle, which has a casting number D-743 or so.

Thanks gerrit

Gerrit,
I do not know what model or number that JD plow in post #14 is. I was told it was paired with a late 20s D tractor when new.

Also I am still hoping someone can identify the Oliver plow in post #1.

I understand draft characteristics of tractor drawn antique plows pretty well. I have learned how to set and plow good enough to do nice looking field work. I am not a plow model expert however, and though I recognize the manufacturer names of most plows I do not know model numbers of hardly any of them.
Thanks for all the interest everyone!
Tony

Tony,
The Oliver plow you have question about is one of the following:
No. 410
No. 412
No. 414
It depends on the plow width on what the number would be. I do have the operators and parts manual for it that I could try top scan if you need me to. The form number of the manual is SB-43-1A being 8 pages in length. I hope this helps.

Kelly

Thank you Kelly!
Now I just need to figure out how to tell if my 4-16s is a model 410, 412 or 414. Would be interesting to put date of manufacture on it as well.
Implement manuals are readilly available much of the time, perhaps I can get one of my own now that I know what I am looking for.
This is a good start, thanks again,
Tony

this is our Rock Island 20A 3-12 plow circa 1927-1935 we are working on, actually plowed a little with it this fall to try it out. We bought it on an auction with our 27F. There were actually two Rock Island plows on the sale, but a friend of ours bought the first one up which was a better 3-14. He painted it up beautifully and it will never see soil in his collection. We really would have loved to swap him since 3-12's is really light for any of the tractors we plan to plow with. I know of most of a 4-14 in another collection, but its missing one bottom and he won't sell it so the hunt continues. We actually would even consider at this point a nice earlier moline in 3-16's or 4-14's.

Would the last 2 digits refer to the furrow width? F.J.W.

Hi Paul, Here is a picture of a Rock Island chain lift 3 bottom plow. I have been thinking of trying to buy it in the spring if its for sale then. Would be nice to have in my collection.

Does Anybody out there on SmokStak have a Pulverator plow like this? I have seen several but never been able to buy one....

I have managed to collect one of almost every piece of original literature I have seen for the Pulverator.

Plows are one of my favorite pieces of equipment.Have 4 of them, one for each of the tractors although only one of them is on steel. Here is the line up,everything is IH of course:

36 F-20,#8 2-14s,Plow Chief btms.
42 H,#8 2-12s,blacksmith shares.
53 SM[Mine]#8 full frame rope trip 3-14s,Super Chief btms.
53 SM[Dads]#16 Heavy Duty Hi Clear 3-14s,Plow Chief btms.

All are rope trip except the #16 and all are in top notch mechanical shape ready to go to the field.

On post 34 Pulverator, I question its life of the moving parts and the possible entanglement of stems on those cutters & shafts.
I'd be surprised if any are located and I wonder about the number ever made.

I have seen about a dozen of them existing so far. That tells me they were somewhat mass produced for sure and for the amount of advertising they made them for several years.

Here is a video of one plowing in England. Looks like it needed a little adjusting but it was still out working.

Referring to Post 36,thats a nice looking IH #10 Heavy Duty plow, only thing missing is the coulters.Finding good original coulters for an IH can be fun although not impossible.

Tony,do you have any MM plows to go with your collection of MM tractors?

Super M,
I have done most of my past plowing with I.H.C. plows.
I bought several of them years ago and learned how to get started with setup and successful plowing with them.
International makes a good plow and I enjoyed them.

I have begun to collect some Oliver and Moline plows in the last decade or so. I have 1, 2 & 4 bottom Olivers and several 2s, a 3 and a 5 in Moline. I have learned to like the Moline plows very much. They have a good trip mechanism, respond nicely to lever related adjustments and when set correctly I believe they draft lighter than some of the other brands.

Here are pictures of a Moline 2 - 14s that I found upside down in a salvage yard iron pile on its way to being cut up!
It suffered only a broken share and a bent lever and I saved it for only $100. The plow was in very good condition with lots of original paint on it and after some dissassembly, greasing and minor repairs I was plowing away with it this last fall.
These photos are right after restoration repairs and you can see the lower front share that I replaced and fitted. I had to heat up the share point and bend the point downward to create what is known as "bottom suck or down suck". Last photo shows 3/8 to 1/2 inch of down suck that makes a plow take to the ground and stay in, even in hard soil.

I really like some of the informative posts made here about everyones plow experiences, thank you,
Tony
