I JUST NOW thought of another thing that can cause the FAILED UPLOAD message:

HOW you name your photos is even more important than the size.
Signs like & or # or * aren't acceptible and spaces are discouraged too.....use the underscore _ NOT a hyphen (hyphens don't work either) to fill spaces.
Harry filled me in about the space thing.......I learned the naming thing the hard way when ftp'ing photos.

I don't know why I didn't think of this a long time ago.....

Harry:

It would be nice if you could somehow diddle the software so it can tell that you are trying to put a previously posted image on a new message and simply let the user know that the board will use what it already has.

I just tried faking-out your system, Harry, and it was smarter'n me. What I did was rename a previously uploaded photo and then try to upload it. Didn't work.

Take care - Elden

The result is that users lose all their photos and Smokstak readers endure the red X instead of a photo.

Dialup users can take advantage of this in the thread options of their control panel...
You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.

  • Show Signatures
  • Show Avatars
  • Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)
Oops, I'll quit linking from my site. I've been spoiled by cable.

I also tell people to go into thier camera settings and set the resolution down to 800x600 or a notch above that. That leaves room for cropping and gives you with a decent size to view on the net. It will also let you store a lot more photos. Cams always come from the factory at thier highest resolution and these days that makes a huge file.

I down loaded two pics and only one appeared as a thumbnail . I tried to get a second one but no avail . Tried to use same pic in another thread and it tells me it has already been used. So whats wrong . I'm new at this .

Photos may be used only once unless you resize AND rename them but that wastes your attachment space too.
You can link to them......right click the photo, copy the url from the properies popup and paste the url into your message.

I have 768kbs DSL and I click off pages that take too long to load.
What you suppose a dialup user does?.......
And yes......a LOT of people still use dialup because there are no affordable alternatives.
Not everyone lives in downtown Manhattan you know.......
I'm one of those poor saps with low speed dial up and it is a royal pain. I learned long ago when trying to upload pictures for eBay auctions, that the smaller the file size the better. I'm just using the simple photo editing program that came in my computer, but I found that even just rotating the image 1 or 2 degrees will cut the file size down to 1/4 to 1/3 the original size without hurting the image quality at all. If you crop and rotate it will get even smaller, but if you crop something way down in size they tend to get a little grainy.

As for Harry saying in an earlier post to be sure to delete a picture if you want to repost it in another thread, I've found that you can repost the same picture by Re-Naming it first.

Edit: Or, you can copy and paste from one post to another. -- Harry
