I've come to the conclusion that the carburetor this thing has is too worn out to allow the engine to idle properly, so I picked up a pair of replacements at a recent car show. The first is a Zenith-1 side-bowl, and the other is a Tillotson; both intended for Model A Fords. I decided to rebuild the Zenith and keep the other as a spare, and as of now the Zenith has been painted and all the brass polished up. By tomorrow, it should be assembled, mounted, and hopefully tested!

Okay, so I forgot that non-lacquer paint and gasoline don't mix....so eventually I'll need to repaint the carburetor. Still, it functions better than the old carb. I did have to shave a bit of metal away from the right front frame support, but it doesn't look bad. The engine does look a bit haggard up close, but that's what happens when it gets used (I might touch it up later). I've also begun on the top deck woodwork, and the first few boards have been cut and placed for reference.

Thanks for sharing your 40B restoration pictures. I have two 40B's from the early 1930's in running condition.

I wanted to comment that every 40B I've ever seen has the carb turned as shown in the attached picture. I believe you can turn the carb flange on the manifold to reorient it. (The ice is from fuel vaporization on a cool humid summer morning)

Please continue with the updates as the work progresses. Oh, and don't bother putting exhaust pipes on it... just run it the way it was meant to be, flames and all. The flames are awesome when running at night

The flange was rotated sometime in the past, and try as I might, I couldn't readjust it. Since the fitting it threads into is brass (I believe), I decided not to fiddle with it. Oh, could I trouble you for some photos of the woodwork on your cars? I have no idea what the dimensions are for the side decks, or the angle of inclination they are supposed to be at. I will hopefully have more progress by this weekend (Only time I can fiddle with it).

Absolutely. My Reading car has almost all of the original wood. I will take some general pictures to start and post more as you need them. Dimensions can also be measured.

The top is looking good!

I've attached some pictures of the original wood work on my 40B from the Reading. The wood has been replaced on my other 40B from the N&W. My paint stripping and repainting has been stalled until the weather improves.

I can get you any dimensions if you like.

A view of he angled footboard support. Somewhere in my 40B literature is gives the angle. I'll see if I can find it. The hole in the support was a later addition, possibly someone's great idea for an exhaust pipe location...

Thanks for all the photos! Right now I'm trying to finish off the forward portion of the deck. As far as dimensions go, I could use the distance from the clutch lever to the bolts that hold the throttle lever block in place. Also, if possible, I'd like to know what the magneto shield looks like and roughly how big it is.

Oh, and today I finally got the hinged section squared away. The wood spacer block between the top of the deck and the front railing is there because of how badly bent up the railing was, resulting in a gap I didn't see until I got the wood installed.

8.5" from the outside edge of the angle to the bolt centerline.

The mag shield is 7.5" long by 5.5" wide with 45's cut out of the corners.

Thanks! For now, that's all I really needed. I'm trying to do everything in stages. The forward portion of the top deck, then the rear portion, the tool tray, and finally the side decks. I'm only able to work on this on the weekends, and if I have money (starving college student here).

Oh, actually, one other thing I was wondering was how the very last deck board attaches to the top, seeing as there are no bolts in that spot? If you could get me a picture of the underside of the rear end, that would be awesome. I really appreciate you helping me on this, as I was afraid that I'd never be able to bring this thing back to life.

All the seat boards to the rear of the friction-drive "handle slot" are screwed to two strips of 1.25" wide flat stock underneath. The flat stock is spaced 3.25" in from either seat board side. If you look closely at the rear-most crossmember that goes between the seat uprights, you'll see theres clearance left between it and the second to last seat board, for these flat stock strips.

Thanks! Well, that means I'll have to redo the back section a bit, as I went ahead using 1x2 oak runners. Oh well! I'll just flip all of the boards over to re-use the holes with the flat stock.

Absolutely! I'm on vacation at the moment, so I won't be able to touch the car for a little while. The one thing I am wondering about at the moment is the dimensions of the deck sills. What the overall length, height and width is, and the angle the top is cut at. I don't need them immediately, but it would give me something to do at home! I have also been thinking about producing a set of scaled drawings of the woodwork so that future restorers will have some concrete data to work from (I just have to find the time).

I finally got a chance to work on the FM today, and I've successfully swapped out the oak supports for steel ones. I was short a few screws, so it isn't all held together just yet. I also got a new gas tank for it that should work quite well.

More updates: This weekend I was able to make the linkage to the magneto for the timing control (and it actually worked to my surprise). I also took a few inches out of a gas tank I had to make it fit under the rear deck, and soon it will be ready for paint and some tank sealer. I did bondo the welded seam to eliminate some of the unsightly spots. Next I'll need to fab up some tank straps from steel stock and drill a hole for the gas cap in the deck, but that'll be a little while off.

This update is a little late, but school takes precedence over my hobbies. I finally set up the gas tank (and gave it an initial coat of paint), and made some mounting brackets for it. While it isn't the original setup, it should work just fine. I also managed to hook the throttle linkage up to the control lever, now that the carburetor sits at the right angle to the manifold. Lastly, the car has officially received a major touch of color, as the rear deck section has been fully painted gloss Hunter Green. The next step will be to finish off the front deck section, and eventually to construct the side decks. For that, I will need the dimensions for the supports that hold up the side decks, as I have no clue what angle they sit at. Work will continue at a steadier pace come summer.
