Default Johnson Heat Regulation Electric Switch

I am not exactly sure what this is, but I assume something to do with dampening ...? This is quite large and weights about 30LBS..18 inches from top to bottom and 12 inches wide...

It sort of looks like a big thermostatically controlled switch? Definitely some kind of switch...

Very cool, so I did some searching. Appears to be from late 1800's originally(I don't know how many years they were made). Used to control heating mainly by operating solenoid type valves as best as I can gather. Don't know how collectible it is but I bet there's not many floating around. Thanks.

PS if you want to find out more search the internet for "johnson system of heat regulation" in parenthesis.

I have had it for many of years and knew it was early and unusual so i bought it now matter how collectible it is to others. I have a extremely good eye for early things and this just caught my eye at The Portland Gas Engine Show many a years ago... I also thought late 1800's or very early 1900's..

Just a guess, possibly a very early circuit breaker. There is something in the construction that reminds me of these large ITE breakers I picked up a long time ago. These are much later vintage, but...
