Russ, did the water pump packing hang in there?
I'll go use my phone to get into faceplant. But I have to see your KTA on the thresher!

Bummer! I can't get on that page. It's private or gone Russ.

The water pump held up pretty good, still leaks a little. Looks like I will have to pack it one more time, may still have to replace the shaft.

Can anyone tell me what magneto was on the KT and the KTA? I don't have a parts book, something I need to get one of these days.

Russ, I'm glad Kirbster posted info! I wanted to know too yet couldn't help. EDIT: Oops, you did ask about the KT. I should've responded with what little I know...
Perhaps the very same mags for the Universal MTA on the assembly line. What I have is a KT owners manual and that talks about a U4 and looks to be an edition 2 by the way the wires come out of the top edge of the cap so I kept my trap shut this afternoon.
I need to look this thread over hard. Lost soul just stepping back in after far too long away.
Thanks Russ!

Kirbster, I want to come across the state and see your collection! You know the Nelson's in your area, ya?
D and N. J and his brother G? OLD show friends. I'd like to visit with you about old things.

Goll, those KT's and KTA's are so blame cool lookin'. The M's are really nice too but that K series... Uff da.

My 30 KT has U4 and brass Stromberg m1 carb. 38 KTA has FM rv4 and Schrebler TTX. Other KTA's just parts units.

Duey,

Funny you mention the Nelsons. I have known them since I was a teen. My first opportunity to go to shows was with the Nelsons.

The whole mag thing I did research on it until I bought a parts KTA and a American Bosch U-4 ED 4 was on it. I have included pictures of the 3 mags that Rudy at Rebuiltmag.com rebuilt for me.

The First is a Bosch ZR-4 that will be going one my 17-28 Twin City

The Second is a American Bosch U-4 Ed 2 that I had Rudy rebuild for my KTA because that is what the manual showed.

The third is the mag off the parts KTA and it is a American Bosch U-4 Ed 4. This mag is a tad bit longer and fits my linkage better, it also has a dial on the back to time it so you do not have to have the front cap off to see the rotor. Rudy showed me all the oddities to this mag.

I have the second mag pictured on my KTA right now and it is strong and starts the tractor on the first pull almost every time.

Gorgeous magnetos Kirbster! Question, does your U4 Ed2 have a timing adjustment lever? A hot U4 Ed1 I received from my tractor "dealer" has the same type of distributor cap and frame but no timing adjustment.
It looks like your ZR-4 should perhaps have a timing lever on the serrations.? An idled down, timing pulled back 17-28 picking them off sounds sooooo pretty!
Russ, sorry for my diversion right above^. Here's an awfully small wrinkle to add to the magneto mix and possibly another pointless, huge diversion. I pulled the mag off the shelf from my 37 MTA and found remnants of two coats of different PG paint on this American Bosch (get this) MJH 4C102 #60299.
This post is subject to scrutiny. I cannot say the mag is original to that tractor and also think the K's and Ms were assembled on the same line but have no actual clue about either.

Duey,

All my mags except the Fairbanks RV4, that I have had rebuilt from Rudy have a timing lever, Just can not see it on the U-4 Ed2

My KTA had a Bosch MJ4 mag on it when I bought it, or I should say when I
traded for it.

The U-4 Ed 2 is a slight bit shorter from impulse coupler to the points cover so my linkage didn't work, I had to make a new linkage bar for it to work properly. But the U-4 Ed 4 fits perfectly with all the original linkage I had with the tractor.

My 1935 KTA is painted about 5 different PG shades, but under all that mustard yellow is a Grey coat coming out.

As for the later KTA's Actually being painted PG 1 that's up for lots of debate, my opinion on this doesn't matter, the point that does matter if you like it the color you painted it, and it runs and not on a scrap heap, that is all that does matter.

Although the KTA runs good and we threshed with it last summer the water pump shaft could really use replaced. Im thinking about tackling this soon, wondered if anybody could clue me in on the dos and donts, easy to remove? I think my packing nut is getting pretty thread worn, anybody have a good source for one? Pretty sure I can have a shaft made locally, but are ther any available? I thought maybe I read where someone had a few made.

Too bad they're not the same as the 21-32 water pump shaft!
Ya might also try emailing sales@molinepartsdotcom to see if he has any.
I'd been in touch (without luck) about clutch facings for the 21-32 so Charlie B's real I think.
I don't know if it'll help; jetstar.minneapolis-molinedotcom/parts
I don't know any do's or dont's but I'd expand on the VERY little experience I have on removing one 283's pump shaft and what I did on the 21-32 if you'd like.
