Default AVAST Freezes my Computer. What else to use?

After getting my Windows 7 computer froze and stuck for a number of times, I've run diagnostics all to be all ok. The crashes came from running browsers, no matter which, Chrome, Firefox or Opera, and/or bringing up the File Explorer.

I uninstalled my paid Avast product and now there are no freezes, the computer works. I re-installed Avast and the freezes are back. Calling them for support is a world-wide circus, so I'm ready to find another choice. Avast is Fired!

Now I need to come up with something else. Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, Kaspersky ?????????????????

Harry:

I'm going to follow you on this one. My biggest gripe is that Avast is trying to sell me a bunch of things that should be included.

One of them is wanting me to pay for driver updates and -maybe- causing intermittent printer problems in spite of there being no driver OEM driver problems. When I go to the H-P site and download their current driver, they say the driver I have is up to date.

Funny thing is around the time I start having printer problems, I get a pop-up wanting to sell me their driver updater.

Avast was good in the past but I'm getting weary of them.

I have used the free avast with Windows 7 with no problems. It has worked well for several years. Maybe you could try the free version. You do have to update yearly and work around the sales pitch. CK

Hey old man (almost as old as me, Harry).
I run Wind Defender as base, with spybot antibeacon- keeps ad-ware off machine. The 2 constantly running should do the job unless you regularly visit porn sites Then I do not think anything will help you.

As needed:-Superantispyware to get rid of cookies, etc. CCleaner both free versions- I don't got a lot of $$.

I use the paid version of Malwarebytes and free Superantispyware and thats all. Plus run Mozilla with no script. Never had an issue.

The latest is that I uninstalled Avast and then installed the free Avast. Apparently Avast doesn't uninstall everything because the free version picked up my password package and it does run fine on the free version.

I also have a paid version of CCleaner and it works fine. The first time that I installed Avast, it deleted my CCleaner program. Might be a bit of rivalry going on right there. I also have a paid version of Malwarebytes, so things should be pretty much taken care of except that Avast had messed with that too.

In the final analysis, the full package of Avast appears to be overdone to the point of taking over my computer. I don't like that so I'll still be looking at other options. A tool that does EVERYTHING puts all your eggs into one basket!

Avast does no refunds after 30 days!

A couple of days ago, I uninstalled and removed the Avast! driver updater. So far, so good.

My lockups occurred when I tried to exit Mozilla Thunderbird and reload. When I tried to reload it, after a little HD action, nothing happened. When I tried to restart Win 7, it froze on the exit screen.

Nothing less than a power off would unfreeze it.

We'll see...........

Same as mine was! Avast is including their own web "safe" browser. Makes me wonder if they are targeting the others.

Harry:

So far, so good. No more oddball lockups (so far). I do remember trashing their "web safe" browser at the same time.
I still have Avast running and am thinking of removing their file cleanup program as well because I already use another program called "Cleanup".

Because I recently renewed Avast for two years and can no longer get a refund, I will use it until it either craps on my 'puter again or the subscription runs out. Then I'll be looking for another antivirus app.
