Your problem is most likely a clogged carburetor.
Very common on small generators including the Honda Eu2000i. The first thing people notice is surging when the engine is supposed to be running kind of slow and it's starved for fuel and races up then back down.....

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure especially on small units as the passages in the carb are very small.
I use Sta-Bil 360 religiously in ALL my small engines and to avoid these problems.

Pump gas is pure trash for small engines since they've been adding alcohol and it's only going to get worse.

Exclamation Re: Yamaha EF600 wont start

I would replace the carburetor. The crap E-10 gas they sell now days, produces 'white rust' in non iron carburetors. it plays hell with internal passages, where you cannot get the crap out. You might tyr and take the carb apart and see if the jets are plugged, but with the low cost of replacements, probably not worth your time, unless you cannot get another one.

Once you get it running, make sure to drain and run dry until the next use, or run 15 minutes weekly and refill the tank to the top with fresh gas. Not filling the gas tank to the top will invite destabilization of the fuel. The volatile gasses vent off (Iso-Propane, Iso-Butane, aromatic hydrocarbons), and ate alky will attract moisture out of the air. Stabil will work, as long as the unit is not moved after installation.

This generator has a fuel pump. Am I correct in assuming it works from a vacuum pulse from the engine?

So I removed the carburator and cleaned it and managed to start it by putting some gas in the spark plug hole. Did this a couple of times and it runs fine now.

It looks like this generator was designed to shut it down by turning off the gas and letting it run out. The switch has 3 identified positions-choke, run and stop. When you choose stop it take a couple of minutes to stop. I did find however that if you fiddle with the switch, just before it goes to the stop position it will shut off immediately so it obviously cuts off the spark. This position is not identified on the switch though. Is this common for these small generators?

One you stop it by running it out of gas it does take 10-15 pulls on the starter rope to start it again.I am presuming it is filling up the float bowl again.

Also does anyone know what the spark plug gap should be?

Thanks

Fred

I am not familiar with that unit at all, but would recommend that you search out a source of ethanol free gas, There is an app called puregas that shows facilities in every state that sells ethanol free gas. I used it to locate one, turns out it's about 18 miles from me, so I make a couple of trips a year down there and replenish my supply which is rotated through lawn mowers, small hand held two cycle equipment, ect. I always treat it with one of the stabilizers, and even if not mixing for my two cycle equipment, add a bit of a good outboard motor oil to prevent rust in my metal cans and gas tanks. I have been doing that for about 15 years now and no problems.

Actually , here in British Columbia one of the major gas companies has ethanol free gas that I have been using. Only problem with it is that it is premium grade so plenty expensive but readily available.

Thanks

That unit was also sold painted red and branded "Homelite"- I had one long ago and have been looking for another off and on. (Anyone near KY have one??)

When it is working properly, the control lever shuts off both fuel and spark in the "off" position. The carb does not have a bowl, it is a diaphragm type, there is a pulse operated fuel pump in the system - fuel is circulated from the tank to the carb, back to the tank. When working correctly, it should start on the 1st or 2nd pull.

Well, mine definitely has a mikuni carb with a float bowl and a pulse fuel pump under the gas tank.
When I turn the on/off switch to off it will run for a few minutes, presumably on the gas in the float bowl. This is NOT a bad idea as ,if the generator only get occasional use, it doesn't leave gas in the carb to go stale etc.But then to start it you have to fill up the float bowl which can take 10-15 pulls.

I have been wrong before, I'll go look at mine. It is missing some parts but I still have the engine. It was a great little set.
