Default Three stage tire pump

I put this under Antique Autos because I believe that this tire pump was used in the early high pressure split rim tire days. So, here is the question...How is it possible for this three stage pump to work unless it has check valves stopping the back flow between cylinders? I pulled the pistons and cleaned, but I can not see any sign of valves down at the bottom of the bores. The three brass tubes are soldered into the cast iron base, I'm reluctant to un-solder and pull them. But maybe the only way to see what is down there. Anyone know for sure if there are check valves between the cylinders? Really cool pump, even if I can't get it back to working condition.

Thanks,

Joe B

Have you tried shaking the pump and listening for rattling in the base?
Obviously check valves are necessary.
That's an interesting piece which functions opposite of a triple expansion steam engine...….

I'm in the process of cleaning the gunk out of the bottom of the cylinder tubes. So far no sight or sound of check valves. Once I get it cleaned out well , I'll try pressurizing each cylinder to see if there is any cross-over. I was hoping that someone had had experience with one of these multi -stage pumps to advise on what I might encounter.

On some of these types of pumps, the air check is in the piston. The one I've had apart was just a leather flapper, not a check ball.
