Default Fordson Pic Sells for Unusually High Price

I'm still scratchin' my head over this one...

Up for auction was a c. 1918 cabinet card depicting an early Fordson. Description stated that the 5x7 image shows a crowd gathered around a Fordson tractor on Main Street in Berthoud, Colorado, and also that a sign on a building in the background was advertising the Barnum & Bailey Circus in Greeley, CO. The seller claimed that the photo came directly from the descendants of the Ford dealer in Berthoud, CO.

Winning bid was $356.

It's not unusual to see two people involved in a bidding war, and paying an unreasonably high price for a relatively common item, but if you check the bid history, the winning bid was submitted by a third party at the last second. And all of them relatively experienced eBayers.

Am I missing something? Does anybody have any idea why this image was so valuable to these three individuals?

Maybe they had relatives in the photo It is a really nice looking photo though.

Mistaken identity? They must have thought it was a picture of one of those green tractors

Just because it came to an end and there was a final bid, doesn't always mean that the sale was made. There was a couple of reel mower last yr that sold for something like $8000, and the seller never got paid. Lots of crookedness in some of these online auctions on both ends.

My guess would be that pic meant something to somebody, either a relative was in the pic, or they own a building in the pic, or the pic was taken in front of the building they own, or they have an interest in the history of the town. I own a historic building and finding pics of it from the early 1900's is like searching for a needle in a haystack. When I find pics it has amazed me at what it costs to get them, what I can't figure out is why anybody else would be interested in them

If for some reason one of the people in the pic is Floyd Clymer of Model T fame, that would explain it. He was the youngest ford dealer. He had his first dealership when 11 years old and he was from Berthoud Co. . He also raced, manufactured and sold several Model T accessories, and wrote lots of books about Model Ts and early cars and motorcycles. Maybe there is a museum in Berthoud that needed the pic.
