Can anyone tell me why Bessemer would build a 12 & 12 1/2 hp engines ? And where does the 1/2 hp come from ? Just found a nice 12 1/2 hp are they rare ?

Could it be the Maytag parts that were used in them ?

12-1/2 hp cylinders are the 7-1/2 x 12 size most commonly used on half breeds. (I had originally put down 7" bore and came back to correct it)

Hey Brian,
I was looking through my dimension sheet for Bessemer engines and it shows that a 12.5 hp engine should have a 7.5 X 12 b&s. (The info sheet I have is for purpose built engines not halfbreeds) On a side note the sheet includes all engine sizes from 8 hp through 165 hp. It doesn't have the 5 hp or a 12 hp listed for some reason...

By golly Troy, you're right! I went and measured my Bessemer Struthers Well Breed and it's 7.5" bore by 12" stroke. I dunno why I wrote 7"....maybe not enough coffee?? HaHaHa!

Was just wondering, seems like it would have made a problem for the parts dept. Maybe they had some cylinders that the bore didn't clean up at 7'' ? Are they Rare ? Thanks for the info

I think the 12hp was a special order for one oil company and 12-1/2hp was the standard engine like on Troy's spec sheet. I've seen one and I seem to remember that was the story that accompanied it. The owner of that particular engine lives in central Ohio. Hopefully someone else can either corroborate my recollection or set me straight.

The more important question is, what are you doing buying a non-Reid engine???

Skidmore.........first..............let's define "rare".........

RARE:
My Dad finds a nice 12 1/2 hp and buys it from the oil company and hires Skidmore to remove it for him so he doesn't have to lift a finger and he sells it to me = VERY RARE! I pay $$$$$ for it and both Dad and Skidmore are happy because they both made money on the deal.......

NOT RARE:
I find a nice 12 1/2 hp and buy it from the oil company and I hire Skidmore to remove it and Dad wants it from me = NOT RARE......in fact, I LOSE $$$$$ on the deal and give the engine to Dad AND pay Skidmore to have it removed...........the look on Dad's face with new engine.........."PRICELESS"......the look on Skidmore's face that I got "snookered" by Dad.........."PRICELESS".........

Dad had a 12 "?" Bessemer when I was a boy but he can't remember what size it was so I will have to dig through old photos and find the one of the tag. It was a nice little engine but it had one flywheel missing and the guy that bought it had another set and put it back together with two flywheels like it had from the factory new. Neither of us can remember who he sold it to or traded them for something else............. Dad also had a little 8 hp and that was a pretty small engine for the oil wells in the area where I grew up in WV.

We've got a 12.5 it is a pretty nice engine. There are several around I would think.

Scott, your 12 should be just about ready to break loose now

Rod your Bessemer is in my sights. This one is in Ohio but a 12 1/2hp. Zach it should be loose by now but have not had time to check it. Going to start getting serious about engine hoarding soon.c SHalle5 sounds like the only way to tell a 12 from a 12 1/2 is to pull the head off and measure ?? thanks Guys
