Default Fairbanks Morse Y-H 25 HP Diesel Sight Glass Replacement

Has anyone ever had to replace the sight glass on the main bearing on a Fairbanks Morse 25 HP Y-H Diesel? Was wondering how they come out and where I can find a replacement glass. One of mine is broken. I'm thinking glass boiler tube would work.

Unscrew the slotted plug, gasket and insert glass, replace plug. Art.

Thanks Art. I saw the threaded holes over each sight glass, is that where the plugs are. They are full of dirt right now.

Sounds like your plugs may be missing, but that shouldn't be hard to make. If I remember correctly, the plug has a vent hole drilled through it.

Once the plug is removed, if it is there, then the glass should lift out once the area is cleaned out. No real magic, just straightforward old school design. My 10 HP glass was not broken so I don't know what size, but diameter probably OK plus or minus some just as long the bottom of the tube fits to the gasket. Length needs to be long enough so the plug pushes down on the glass to form the seal at the bottom.

Hi Andy. I'll have to try to post a few pics. I bought a trailer to mount it on and have been working on getting the oak all drilled so I can bolt it down. One of the sight glasses is broken and the other looks like it was leaking so those will definitely have to be replaced. How's it going with the tray cooler for yours?

Still waiting for the trays....
So mine has likely similar glass sight gauges. The threaded plug holds the glass in. I replaced the gasket top and bottom with a thick gasket from the auto parts store. Works perfect. The screw plug was also vented and that's how the moisture was showing up on the inside of the glass. A cover over them fixed it.
Don't forget those pictures!

Two more pictures of it on my lift removing the steel it was sitting on to get it ready for oak.

And the last two pictures of the engine on oak all bolted down to the dedicated trailer I bought for it. Now the fun begins, going all through it and checking everything out before I try to run it.

Thanks guys !! When I was trying to find a FM Diesel I could not find anything local to me. They exist, but no one wanted to sell. I missed out on a running engine in Florida through an email miscommunication. This engine came from Idaho and I had it shipped via truck to me. I cannot thank Lauren Langdon enough for going out of his way to help me procure this engine. For those of you who don't know Lauren, he is the proud owner of the FM Take-apart engine whose restoration was covered in great length here on this website. I still have my heart set on a FM Y 37 1/2 vertical. If I live long enough, eventually I will own one of those too.
