Hi, Bud. Theres not much company info on the Superior Gas Engine Co. from Springfield, Oh. Supposedly all the company records were destroyed many years ago. And nobody has YET to find anything as far as being able to tell the date of the engines by thier serial #'s. The oldest "oil country" type Superior that I've seen is the 35hp on perminate display at the Pawnee, Okla show grounds. It has a 3 digit serial # and the single piece head plate is dome shaped. And this particluar engine seems to have never had a brass ID tag. My 35hp Superior has a very low 4 digit serial #. I bought my 35hp from the 2nd owner, who was still using it untill 1992, he showed me some paper work he had recieved from the original owner showing my engine being installed in 1902 via the serial #. About the only company info I know about the comapny is that is was formed in Philidelphia, Pa after the Otto gas engine works was Nationalized. As it seems there an anti German movement here in the USA long before WWII. Hopefully someone else here will chime in with some more information?
