Cast iron can be successfully welded. In the midwest there are a couple of guys that weld it and it does not crack. They specialize in repairing old tractor blocks/ heads that are irreplaceable. (due to age)
I have had a couple of aftermarket BBC heads welded and they have held up just fine in a blown alcohol xsituation. I also have had an old Oliver engine block welded up.

It must be done properly by an experienced guy... not just any old welder
Generally the part is heated up in an oven... or one shop used a bed of coals. It is heated to cherry red. To weld the part is it actually gas welded with a cast iron filler rod. The part is then chucked back into the oven and allowed to cool slowly.
There is one shop in Mt. Vernon, IL and one in Jacksonville, IL I have used.
Good luck.
