Default 5.4hp Zephyr Outboard

I have what I think is a 1948 evinrude zephyr that my father in law painted some affual color right before he died about 25 years ago, and I am starting to piddle around with it and I would like to know the original color of this motor. It runs and looks good except for the color. any help would be appreciated, oh and Hi all I just found the forum and it looks like an informative place to visit.

The Evinrude Zephyr is a very interesting little outboard. Four cylinder opposed , 5.4 HP. The carburetor set -up is very complicated, with primer pump, external tank vent and vent shut-off. As for color, must all of the motor was painted dull aluminum. the post war models had the fuel tank painted a teal blue color. 1949 was the last year for the Zephyr.
For more info, post your question at "ask a member" on aomci.org.
There is a paint supplier that serves the antique outboard community that has exact color match paint for just about all the old outboards... Reprotint

I have an original Zephyr. Sort of a base silver with green tank accents. I will get pictures. Sort of buried behind airplanes. Also not many left. Most caught on fire and were pitched in lakes. Fabric plug wires snaked around the carburetor did not always workout.

Jim, that is a nice looking Zephyr, it looks like in real nice shape and original , un-molested. They are sweet runners, exceptional smooth idle. Just a caution on the spark plugs. The original plugs are Champion J6J the current equal is a J6C. Same heat range but the plug is a bit longer which puts the wire terminal a little closer to the inside of the front cowl cover, perhaps affording an opportunity for a spark to jump to ground. With carb and gas under that cowl , I don't like any stray sparks. The plug that I use in my Zephyrs with good results is NGK BM7A, same heat range but with a shorter overall length and a screw -on wire terminal.

Thanks, the plugs in this one are 6JC, This motor has always had problems with the plugs or wires shorting out and causing at least one plug to foul. I am thinking about trying to shield these parts some way to avoid this, and by the way I am looking into a 3 or 5 hp Johnson made in the early 50's, but I would like one that you can start in neutral. But i am not sure what year they put a numeral gear in these motors.

Jim, you are looking for a Johnson 5 hp model TN ( N= neutral) .
This pretty common green Johnson was made from 1950 thru 53.
If you have an interest in old outboards , sounds like you need to come out to one of the AOMCI meets where there is normally a swap & sell.

Thanks, I just received my copy of "The Old Outboard Book" and it has a lot of info about these motors. And the next AOMCI meet near me is June 8 at Lake Houston.

I was wrong about the spark plugs, they are J7J plus.

Looks good, I took off the fly wheel just to inspect what i could see and it all looks good. Do not have any idea of how to set the points or anything else. and it has a bunch of clay like material covering a bunch of small wires going under the plate the coils and points are attached to. I may need to get the book to figure out what is going on under the fly wheel. This is what it looks like
