I see now why the flat steel spring was in the governor linkage, there was no spring at all inside the governor. Thanks to Mark's thread i will rebuild as needed.
Can anyone tell why the front fender support sticks out past the fenders on both sides?
I have the manuals that came with the tractor when new, they are pretty worn, especially the parts manual. Inside i found two receipts, one for an overhaul at the Chevy garage on june 21, 1940. The cost for that was $79.11, 16 dollars labor and 60.21 parts with some misc charges. The other half reciept has recorded mileage and must have been for a car or truck, 133 dollars!!

Also, the potmetal governor housing is in great shape, although the linkage pivot is shattered after the baling wire was removed. Adolph probably repaired this himself.
I assumed the ol twin was in desperate need of an overhaul after the 1940 harvest, or the harvesat was a good one.

The right front wheel could sure use a rim change. I had some cutoffs lying around, the skid ring holes on this tractor are in the center and the rim i have has two rows of holes, i'm assuming the cutoff rim i have is for a later M&M?
I also found out that the lower radiator tube is missing.

If you mean the pipe from the lower rad outlet to the water pump, it's just 1 1/4" pipe with a 90 deg pipe elbow and a short stub pipe to connect it to the water pump. Both ends connect with a short piece of rad hose.

Removed the valves from the head this evening. Looks like uncle Dan had them freshly sharpened. seats don't look too bad, need to tank the head tomorrow.
Definately good guides, he said they had been replaced. He still thinks there may be a spot rusted through into one exhaust port but i'll be darned if i can find it yet. Anybody seen that on one of these? I have seen that on an IH 10-20 and a farmall regular, both had severe pitting in the water jacket. Some moisture had gotten in several ports while it slept in the barn, but nothing serious and he can't remember putting water in it at all.

Russ...I see the current set of fenders are 12" wide. The front fender bracket is probably for the later 15" fenders.

The pot metal governor arm bracket that is broken was only built to transfer the governor movement and was not meant to contain spring tension. Your uncle may have found the original spring broken and was unable to find a workable substitute. It is a difficult spring dimension to find as a 5/16" rod has to slide freely on the inside when the spring is compressed. Eric Best has had new governor springs wound and may still have some unsold inventory.

A lot of the lower radiator pipes on these tractors have rotted away. When I get to that point on the 20-35 I'm going to investigate the possibility of a schedule 40 PCV or ABS plastic substitute.

Fenders on my 1930 17-28 are 16 1/4 inches but it has road wheels. Will have to get fenders made as they are beat.

These aren't that great either, if the tractor turns out a good one we may address that.
I can't figure that bracket, knowing the family of the original owner i can't see them buying a replacement part like that instead of building one. Is it possible that this tractor had wider fenders originally and they put the narrow ones on used?

17-28 has strap 66 inches across and is basically straight across where 12-20 is curved back a couple of inches.

Russ...per the parts book 17-28 tractor numbers 20850 to 27425 were outfitted with the 15" wide fenders. Your front support looks like part #TY174E which was used starting with tractor #21547. So your tractor originally came with 15" fenders and the front support bracket is probably correct. The 12" fenders must be a later retrofit.

Went to pull the pan off last night, didn't drop the wishbone.
Reminds me of a 15-30 pan, weightwise. Debating on pulling the engine to clean out everything, inside the frame is mighty crusted over, antique lubricant.

Pull the radiator off the bottom tank casting, remove the 4 bolts from the engine mounts, a fuel line and a couple of linkages and slide it ahead and lift it out. Easy job and doesn't take long. You might need a good chisel to get that antique lube mix off! If they paved roads with that stuff, it would last forever! I must have chiseled off about 100 lbs of that stuff cleaning up the 20-35 TC before Mark got it.

When I stopped at Phil's to get the 20-35 I saw that I had come to soon. Another couple of weeks and the primer coat would have been ready to go on...

After seeing what you've been finding now that you've got it apart, primer would have been a little premature!!!

Anyway, on my tractors, in most cases, I usually leave the paint in the can on the store shelf!

Thanks for all the info, its a great help. I'll have to think about pulling that engine, i am sure going to reseal the radiator anyway and it looks like we may have some front and rear oil leaks.

And while you have the engine out, you can have a look at the clutch and see how badly worn the drive peg holes are in the driven disc. Might want to re-locate and drill three new ones or ream and bush the originals if they are very sloppy. Gets rid off the "knocking" noise at idle.

I've seen them so badly worn they look like slots.

Russ...here is the pin drive hole issue on the clutch that Phil was referring to. The clutch is not attached to the flywheel. When the engine is slid into place the 3 drive pins on the flywheel slide through the three holes in the clutch assembly and that's it. My neighbor has 2 rough later 17-28's and is trying to assemble a runner. This picture is from one of his tractors. Phil was the supplier of a usable motor shortblock which was badly needed as both engines had sat full of water so long there was nothing left to work with.

While this clutch is the worst I've seen and it looks like total junk it is perfectly reusable simply by redrilling the 3 drive holes in the center disc.
On my 17-28 the holes had been redrilled once already. On a related note the 20-35 / 27-44's are a similar set up except 6 drive pins are used and the clutch unit uses 4 friction discs vs. the 2 used on the 12-20 / 17-28 / 21-32's.

One of the clutch and a couple of my neighbor's defunct engine.

Haven't been able to work on the tractor, this weekend should allow some.
Noticed awhile ago how the front wheel skid rings had cut into the frame over the years, even into the engine mounting bolt nuts. On our McCormick Deering tractors most times they wore into the steering rod on the right side, sometimes into the hollow of the rod.
Also, i don't think the end of the steering gearbox arm should be bent back like this.

If driving plate holes are worn or plates is cracked on 17-28 or 12-20 a 21-32 plate is the same on early models.
