Default Ingersoll Rand Tracked Self Propelled Air Compressor

Lauren and I worked on his compressor tonight. As the title notes, it is an Ingersoll Rand Tracked Self Propelled Air Compressor. Any one know Any thing about it? I've seen a similar Chicago Pneumatic unit, but have struggled to find much about this one. We will be using it to start the FBM 60hp Model N

I've been unable to find anything that would indicate origin. The tags for it are missing and all the block has are a few casting numbers. That was one of the reasons we posted it here in hopes of answering those questions.

I used to see these compressors used with Rock Drills . They were used in Highway construction in mountain passes. The Air Compressor on tracks would tow the track mounted rock drills up the slopes and drill a line of holes to set Dynamite in the hole to blow sheets of rock off the slopes. Have not seen one in 25 years. Merton

Interesting as this one can just pull itself up the slope into the barn, I'd love to see one with the capabilities you describe! That would be fun!

What are those casting numbers and can you post a close up of each side of the engine as well?

Look at your thread on ACMOC!

The engine is a Waukesha.

I'm sorry, but I've been working all day and haven't had time to sit down and look at everything. Now that I have, I find that Eddie B. So graciously solved the puzzle! The pictures he provided:

My friend Ken Avery here in CT. went to look at a compressor for sale and when he got there it turned out to be a Chicago Pneumatic Crawler compressor very similar to yours. It was kind of amazing since Ken and I only collect crawlers. He had it for about 15 years during which time he used it on several projects. I borrowed it once to do some rock clearing for a pool in the back yard.
So in our town we have Millstone Point Nuclear Power plant which has some very heavy duty CP compressors. A group from the company came to do some maintenance and one of Kens friends told them about the little crawler compressor. They came over and looked at it and got back to Ken with some info. The unit had a oval brass tag on the side which was stamped CV. They said CP had produced a number of them for railroad operations. The CV stood for Central Vermont Railroad and had been used for track maintenance in out of the way mountain areas of their lines. It is narrow so the machine can safely drive on the ties between the rails. In 2011 Ken had a large online auction and someone took it to a new home along with 75 other crawlers. There may be a U-Tube video of it some where out there. Ed B

Yep, the video of it is available. It was the only one I could find. Given the info Eddie B. Provided, I'm thinking this was a R.R. unit.

Yes they were called Crawl-Air. My father used to work for IR and talk about the equipment they built. Those did not last to long before they made it into a one piece unit. One of the last compressors my father worked on used 25,000hp jet engine to drive the compressor for natural gas.

I have that same I-R catalog and wouldn't you know that is the one page that is missing. Goes from Sheet 1B to Sheet 3.
