Default Heider Model C front suspension spring

If you've ever had a good look at a Heider, you've seen the front axle rests on a single large coil spring in the axle's center. The coil spring holds up a cast (iron?) plate in the center of which is nestled a large mushroom shaped pivot pin. Many (most) of these plates are cracked. Do any of you have any ideas as to how to take apart all this without getting killed by flying bits of metal. I'd like to get the cracked plate out to see if it can be welded or needs to be recast. If it needs to be recast, I'm open to suggestions as to foundries and also to sharing up on an order for more than one piece in an effort to save money.

Thanks, Steve

Steve, we haven't taken a C front apart yet, but we have a D and a couple of Rock Island fronts (2 springs instead of one). none have been an issue, the spring isn't under much (even any possibly) pressure and once you release all the bolts they just come apart as you would expect in our experience.

Paul, thanks for the info. I've been poking around the various pieces of the front end, making new ones of the simple bar stock pieces since the originals are all bent up or "repaired". The whole deal seems to have a lot of play as one loosens the different parts. So, I'll keep on going slowly and let you know what happens. It looks like they must have come loose in use rather often. No lock washers, and lots of double nuts on bolts, or bashed in bits of thread to keep anything from moving, also makes disassembly unpleasant.
