Default Witte Hit and Miss Age and General Info Help

Hi all - New to the site and New to hit and miss engines. Just bought a nice 2 hp Witte Engine and Iím looking to restore it. Couple questions

Can anyone tell me the age and anything else about this engine?
I want to restore it but should i try getting it to run first then take it apart? It moves well and seems to be all together.

Thanks for the help!

Joe

I saw the photos from the for-sale ad. It looks like a decent little engine. I don't have a serial number list handy but someone will likely chime in with a manufacturing date.
The interesting thing about the engine is that it has been retrofitted with a WICO EK magneto. It has the mounting bracket for the Webster high-tension mag. The Websters were used for only a short period of time and not many of them have survived. The WICO is a nice addition.
It looks like the engine is operable as it is. It's already greasy, so you may as well get it running, make sure everything works as it should, and spend some time getting to know it. Then, you can tear it apart, clean it, and paint it if you want.

40977 would make it a 1918 according to Wendel's notebook 40979 was the last serial number for that year.

Joe,

Serial numbers were hand stamped. Oftentimes the stamps didn't get held squarely when they were struck or the stamps were damaged. The second digit in your serial number is a zero.
