Default John Deere Dain Sickle Mower

I have a John Deere Dain Mower with Parlin and Orendorff seat and tool box with cover. Wood pitman gone and tongue missing. I'm wondering what the value is. Would appreciate any information and wood replacement suggestions.

Nice old mower! As far as wood, Ash is what I've found as best for the tongue (if you can get it...if not, then I like Douglas Fir). Make sure it's a tight fit in the saddle on the mower and 14' long for draft sized horses. The pitman is usually made of Oak. That has a long knife, for an open gear mower, from the looks of the second picture. Alot of people are gunshy of open geared mowers, but I really don't see a problem with them...especially with modern lubricants that are made for open gear lubrication. It's lasted a long time already, and will probably outlive all of us!
The wheels don't seem to have an excessive amount of wear, and I see no breaks in the main frame. Grab the end of the pitman crank shaft and see how much slop is in that bushing...that will give you a very good idea of how much it's been used. A new bushing in front and bearings in back aren't that big of a deal.
All in all, if the mower was out here, I'd say it'd be somewhere between $100 and $200, just because it's a "Dain" and not as common as some others.
Good luck with it!!
JH

Good information for sure but remember where you live makes the dif on value, I would probably bid a lot more than $200 but then open geared mowers of any kind are scarce here!

I'd trade ya straight across, open for oil baths! haha Lots of open gears and very few oil baths around this area. Like I said, I sure don't see any problem with either!
