Default Onan 6DJBFJ Running Away!

Good day, sirs.

As stated in the title, I have a:
Model No. 6DJBFJ
Serial No. J930523065
Spec. No. 30632C
Options: E8 H1 H49 H335

This unit came atop of my department's "new" 1994 Pierce ladder truck. It hadn't been run in quite some time, so after the prep work of filters and new oil we finally got around to getting the air out of the fuel system and starting it today. When it finally began running on its own, it took off running WIDE OPEN while blowing thick blakish/grey smoke from the exhaust and the stop switch didn't begin to touch it. The quickest way we were able to shut it off was to cover the air inlet with a piece of cardboard and starve the thing of air.

Could this just be a matter of lubricating the governor linkage or the speed nut needing adjusted?

The gov on them can be very hard to break. It is a gear driven gov with an assembly in the middle. I would check over the gov linkage for binding. You can check the gov by operating the throttle by hand. Unhook the two and run the throttle up and down. The gov linkage should move with the throttle. If it moves ok the gov is ok.

I would pull them and have them tested. Also make sure the throttle moves easily. Someone will be along with the service manual numbers for you to down load. All the test you need are in it. Easy to do.

Billy, Can those engines run away if there is excessive crankcase blow by?
I had a 1980 VW diesel wagon that had that problem. I had to re route the crankcase venting.
SO I also ask the original poster, Was the engine oil OVER FULL before it was started?

Motorhead
They can if it gets really bad. It would also depend on how many hours this one has. What shape it is in. A lot of things need to be checked out. But I hope it turns out to be simple.

I do not believe so. It was checked numerous times and it showed good on the dipstick.

That's good. Lets hope it is as Billy suggested. I know the Onan isn't like a 2 stroke Detroit but the rack linkage on those will stick wide open and MAN, What a noise they make. Thank goodness you guys knew what to do immediately to stop it.

One of my MDJEs did this when I first got it. It was a governor problem. I could (with some effort) hold the governor back with my hand to keep it at the correct speed. I believe the governor was assembled improperly, however it is possible it was stuck and flipped when I took the cover off.

Taking the flywheel off will give you access to the cover. When you remove it you'll be able to check all of the parts of it to make sure they aren't sticking. It wasn't hard at all, just a little bit tedious.
