I have a 346 and the number is on top of the crankcase, just behind the cylinder.

You're right DirtBike and Reed. Our 1944 346 has the number on that area on top of the engine.

I found this number on top of the engine: 850480. Does this help? If anyone has what year it is please post it. Thanks

1943. That is probably an early oilfield ZC. Nice.

Man thats just too wierd about the location of the serial #'s I've got 2 ZC346's......And after what you posted I thought I might be loosing my mind!

So I looked again at these 2 engine I have.....Neither one has the ser# stamped on top like yours, but only on the end of the crankshaft. The serial #'s I have are in the 890000 to 900000 range. Maybe thats the differance?

fire96...your engine # 850480 is a 1943 model.

Propane can be touchy! Its hard to tell if you getting too much or not enough, untill you figure out exactly what your engine WANTS to start. I'll bet your giveing it TOO much propane to start.

On the side of the cyl you have your decompression valve, start it on gasoline using the decompression valve hole to suck in the gasoline on the intake stroke. Once it fires once or twice on gasoline turn on the propane.

The PVC stuff is just a cheap and easy "field job" way of adding oil to the engine while its running, so you dont have to hand start a hot engine! Which can be a B*#*!

ZC's can be one of the quietest and smoothest running throttlers out there! The secret it to use the choke plate thats located between the air cleaner and the carb, this way you can restrict the ait flow to about 5% and turn your propane nearly off. It will take you a little time to figure out the exact mix your engine wants to run ultra smooth and quiet.

I hope we can see a YouTube video of this!

Doug, My 346 has #954045 on the end of the crank. Would you know the year of this unit? Thanks, Jim.

Jim,
My list only goes up to #908813 which was the first engine built in 1948.
So I'd assume, by looking at the production #'s of the previous years, your engine was built in 1953 give or take a year.

Doug Waggonner I know this is an old post but I was hoping that since you seem to have information on 346 serial numbers that you could help me with mine. I recently bought one and my serial number is 869864 which I also found on top of the case.
