The flywheel in the old photo above could easily approach 4' in diameter.I make that estimate comparing it to the closest mans height, assuming he might be average height,5'10" or so?(I wonder what he is holding in his hand and resting on top of the rim?)
That would make that wheel similar or a few inches taller than my own?Perspective seems difficult to gauge with such a tall wheel on it's own,and the physical size in my photography is poorly represented I feel? I have a Bryan pump jack wheel in the background of one photo here which incidently has a similar lazy 's' in the spokes to the old pic above. The Bryan wheel is only 30".No way am I suggesting the wheel in the old pic might be a Bryan. After seeing Nathans example there's every chance it might be a Danks creation? I sat a firebrick in front of my Danks rim to give some comparison to the rim profile. The other pic is reaching out at chest height to hold the Danks flywheel by the rim.The wheel is quite a serious chunk of cast iron when seen close up. |

That was worth waiting for Darryl, thanks very much!
Were any of those 17.5 sec's dedicated to stretching a tape measure by any chance?,...I don't want to have to send you back there ![]() I have no idea how something like that was operated, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the handle would have been long enough to accommodate a second pair of hands?Possibly following the principle of a saw pit, intended for two workers, both facing the job? It's a wild guess but as you point out it's a fairly large pump and might be hard work for just one operator? Apart from the size question the handle on mine is around the same distance(in perspective) from the crankshaft. Tell me you measeured the wheel please Darryl ![]() ![]() edit:...did I just spot a repair on the flywheel?,i'm wondering what the tab and two screws are about on the outer rim? |

It's hard to find good help Darryl!
![]() ![]() I would be interested to know the hole to hole centre measurement from the crankshaft to the crank handle,as well as the overall diameter of the wheel,if you could do that for me please mate? While you are at it could you note the deck height of the table from the ground, and centre height from ground to the crankshaft? pleeezzz? |
