Default Onan Homesite Power 3500

So, I inadvertently became an Onan owner when I purchased a lift that was powered by one back in March.

https://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=167085

I then came across another BFA 4.0 on craigslist for $200 in great condition to replace the Onan on my lift. I now purchased a 3rd Onan tonight.

I purchased an Onan Homesite Power 3500. I thought these were made in the US but upon further inspection they aren't. It looks like it's powered by a Chinese Honda GX200 copy. I've read that these are pretty reliable engines so I'm not very concerned. I also have quite a bit of experience working on genuine GX200 engines, so I know parts are readily available.

I do have a few questions:
Are these pretty good generators? I'm planning to use it on a pontoon boat to power an audio system and some lighting.
Is $300 a good deal or did I pay a fair price.
Has anyone owned one?

Wow! Can anyone confirm that Onan (Cummins) used CHINESE made motors in their home grade portable generators? Can't be.. I despise anything made in China especially tools and I would never expect an American company such as Onan / Cummins to team up with those Chinese communists to use cheap azz crap ...

It says made in China right on the nameplate. I'll take a picture tomorrow.

Cummins has factories in China. But I think the ones like that. Are rebranded China units.

They sure Are! I have one sitting at a friend's that the cam gear broke after maybe 20 hours of run time.. was bought new to replace a 7 year old honda on a concrete cutting truck..

the guys at the supply house said they were made by honda.. when it broke and we told the owner it said made in China he was super pissed.. brought it back and they said keep it and took the price of that one off the new honda he bought.. that was made in Indonesia that later broke.. can you guess what broke? The timing advance spring on the cam that did the compression release.. it would still start.. but was very hard to pull over.. we took it apart after the honda dealer said it would be 3 or 4 weeks to fix, to replace it with a older made in Japan cam on the same model engine that was 10 or so years older.. guess what.. not the same part.. the real honda cam was a different diameter cam gear, and bigger diameter for the bearings.. and was about 1/4 inch longer than the made in Indonesia one, so we put it back together.

we than got the owner to call the supply house that sold it to him to call honda and it took honda 2 weeks to send the repair shop a new cam after 3 or 4 phone calls..

It's still running today.. maybe at the most gets a 20 amp load on it.. it's 6500 watts.. we have had to replace the fuel level sight 2 times as it is always out in the elememts

as I recall Cummings/Onan had to buy back one lot
the fuel shutoff for the "tank over" would pop out of the grommet
spilling the whole tank full

total recall [not the movie]

makes one wonder about Cummings all together

I don't know about Cummins quality. But I know Onan's quality has gone down hill fast.
