If you liked that, you would have really enjoyed seeing me discuss NEC Articles 700, 701 and 702 with a Generac salesman who used the term "emergency" while describing his residential (optional) standby product.

I'd feel sorry for the guy who decided to be a generunk dealer(or for any other units that were that not good), and actually wanted to give his customers good service.

Imagine the stress when there is a big power outage and several people who depended on you are calling, because what you had installed failed.

I know a few sales and service people that deal with them. The sales people, without exception, say that they are the best product on the market. The service people say, "they are better than they used to be", then some add "that isn't saying much...".

All I can say first hand is that my employer decided to buy one last year, against my advice - and it required a service call within 48 hours of installation.

Years ago, Generac contacted us and asked if we wanted to become a dealer. I told them we had a good relationship with the local Cummins distributor, and thanks but no thanks for the offer. They called several more times after hours, and left messages on voice mail to call them if we were interested in becoming a dealer. I never responded. Finally, they called and left a message that said this was their last attempt to contact us. As I listened to the message the following morning, I thought "Thank you and good riddance." Most of our work was commercial and industrial. We didn't solicit the residential market, but if someone wanted us to install a generator for them at their house, they got a Cummins (or Onan years ago) 1800 rpm machine. I never took much stock in those 2 cylinder, air cooled, aluminum V-twin engines. I always tried to educate customers as to the differences between an industrial 1800 rpm generator and a 3600 rpm machine. Some customers would comment "Why do I need an industrial rated machine for no more often than I lose power?" My reply would be "If you're going to spend money on a standby system, do you want it to work when you need it?"

Generac's half hour infomercial sure looks good to the uninformed. I have always contended that they were good at two things: 1. Marketing their products to the resi market at a very competetive price, and 2. Building an attractive looking box that blends well with residential exterior decor. That's why they have the lion's share of the residential standby power market nationwide. Too bad they come up short on what really matters.

Of course sales people are going to say that they are the best product on the market. Sales people have to make the sale, they get paid a commission on sales, no sale= no income. That's the way it is at Sears, Lechmere's , new car delears.....

People in Leon county know not to call me. To work on genajunk units. They also know not to ask me what I think of them.

I think the day of the stand alone generator for residential back up power is very near its end.

The future will be quiet battery backs up with solar on the roof.
You may have a generator of some sort but it will be part of heating system like the Honda Co-Gen.

People who manufacture crap will not be around for long because the integrated systems are going to be expensive and people will quickly learn that like a good furnace you need a good inverter and a good co-Gen for your home or it cost you in the long run

I bet most people will look at the generator as we know it now in kind of the same way people today look at a gas powered wringer washer.
" How Quaint, they have a Generac Box in the flower garden. I wonder if it works.............. "

I think there will always be a need for a fuel driven generator.. it's just the fuel that will change.. solar won't work in the dark or during a storm. and wind generators will blow away..
