Solar and bats ......maybe in the real long term view.

So far nothing matches the energy density of liquid fuels, except nuclear. Lithium bats make a good try but I suspect they still don't make it, and they are currently $$$$$$$$$$$ in large qualtitites.

Other issue is a "normal" sized array of bats won't cut it for multiday outages in northeast winters. No sun , and power usually fails after an ice or snow storm when the solar array will be covered with opaque snow. So no recharge with solar for a while unless you get out the shovel, but with ice you wan't wont to wack the fragile $$$$$$$ solar arrays.

If it runs on BEER cans, then I have several potential customers in mind.

Reminds me of Dr Emmett Browns DeLorean, in Back to the Future. The fuel used by the car in the last movie.

Tesla's idea of solar tile is very impressive and good looking. I like that it's supposed to last the lifetime of the house vs asphalt shingles. Problem is the devil's in the details. And the capital cost.

-- weight ......hopefully it will weight less than slate roofs which also last life of the house. With slate the roof needs to be structurally reinforced to take the weight.

-- all those solar tiles will have to have waterproof connections, lot of possible failure points.

-- that Lithium bat is a little scarry for fire safty. It likely contain as much energy as a gasoline tank. I would prefer it to be stored outside or underground for fire safty.

I sense a lot of resistance.

Yes battery and solar systems have a way to go yet.
But the pace of change is fast.
Look how much cheaper and better they are today than 5 years ago and extrapolate that 5 years into the future.

I'm not resistant to some standby power technology that might one day offer an alternative to my 32 year old Onan RDJC and the several smaller sets I have. However, I haven't seen anything yet that I believe to be a suitable replacement. One can make a convincing argument that the diesel generator reached its pinnacle in the mid 1980's to early 1990's.

Only suitable replacement for a 32 year old set would be another 32 year old set, or 42 or 52 or 62 etc. I sure wouldn't want a 22 year old one!

The only 22 year old generator I'd want is a dkd or similar
. Or a late J series.. and I have both..

I was at the Home depot today looking for some material to cap some windows.
It's the first time I made an effort to look for the Generac display that I have ignored for the longest time.
They probably still sell them but they don't show them off anymore.
I think that's a sign people are tired of being parted from their money.

Generac is on display at Lowes, prominently displayed by the entrance doors ( must be a high markup item).

Co generation is a nice idea , Europe's been doing that since the 50's piping and selling waste steam heat from power plant underground to the town homes.

That YANMAR co generation idea is nice , but it's sounds like just a SMALL regular water cooled genset, likely nat gas powered piston engine. Will need oil changes. Problem is might be lucky to have a 5 year life before engine needs a rebuild. 5 years with a 25% duty cycle is 11,000 hours.

Has to be small engine , here in northeast a typical 7.5 kw JB pulls down 1.2 gal/hr gasoline ( ~ 150 kBTU/hr input) at full load. It' s about 18% efficient at full load, so that's 123 kBTU of waste heat out exhaust and cooling water (maybe 1/2 and 1/2). Typical house here had a 100 kBTU/hr furance to heat house on worst case day ~ -15 degs.

So you can see likley it would need to be a smaller kw gen, a JB it would likely generate more electricity and heat than you need.

Might be more practical if the co-generation system used a fuel cell ( maybe phosphoric acid one). Less moving wearout issues.

I read some technical stuff out of Japan that is giving the natural gas fueled Xlink engine.
No number on engine life numbers but there are thousands of them in service providing heat and power ( 1 kw electric I don't have the thermal numbers ).
A lot of people over there heat with Kerosene wick heaters so their heating requirements are lower than we have.

Here's a closer look of the unit.

I wonder how long it can run at 1200 rpm?

The link ......looks like it's just a compact long stoke design engine with extra parts to break and wearout.

Basically, it is the design of the early Sterling Engine.

i think it looks like an Atkinson cycle engine, if you look closely while watching video you will notice that the power stroke is longer than the other strokes.
