Benzamin is just the maker of the tube socket. The tube looks like a 199 or 299 or 399 all the same but made by different companies. Ron

What did the tube do?
Does it have a separate filament supply?

Perhaps with an A and a B battery and some sort of a reproducer it was a code practice oscillator...Allie

Looks to me like a line set as it has the shorting switch. But who knows.

Any numbers on the tube that could identify what kind of tube it is? Knowing that would help a lot in figuring out what this apparatus was supposed to be used for, since we could retrieve the schematics for the tube and match that up to how it is connected.

It looks like that is a transformer sitting next to the tube. Could this have been some sort of wireless telegraph transmitter that is missing most of its pieces? The tube would be part of the RF oscillator circuit, and when the key is pressed an RF signal is generated and sent to the transmission antenna.

With that tube, and no capacitor or coil to serve as phase shift/feedback, it's certainly not capable of oscillation.

I would venture a greater educated guess that the square box is indeed a transformer accepting some line voltage, and the output is rectified to supply the key.

It's not an uncommon key design- it's a common landline telegraph key design- not spark gap (small contacts, no protection).

Look here:
http://www.telegraph-office.com/tel_off-page.html

It's a common design. The Watts & Company standard key looks pretty close to me.

Reason why they would set up something like this? Simple- a 'single ended' telegraph line, requiring no local battery.

How would it work? Ah... you have AC on the line, transformers at both end, center tapped, with a sounder between the CT and ground. Sounder is operated by DC in common-mode. Power to key is AC, rectified by the transformer and tube.
