Smile Whats your favorite stick welding rod for cast iron?

I notice a lot of threads here on how to weld cast iron and different ways to do it. When using a stick welder i usually use nickel. But i was just wondering what wonderful rod may be your favorite? Would like to hear about them. Thanks.

Palco 808. No fancy prep or pre heat, strong and can be machined. Only downside is that it wont blend in to bare unpainted cast.

I agree with Nick. Iíve used PALCO 808 since the mid 70ís (before I could drive). Dad was a certified ship welder and 808 was the only thing he would use for cast welding. Iíve heard good things about Muggyweld and a few others but Iíve had good success with the 808ís and will stick with them.

I use nickel rod on the bigger items, and my MIG on small items .

I've had several things welded by a friend. He uses nickel rod. It works good except that I can't file it. I want something that I can work. Can you file palco 808? Ron

I typically use Lincoln Ni-55 rod with pre, and post heating. Usually exhaust manifolds or adding turbocharger support brackets to the same on antique heavy trucks. Have repaired broken castings with the same and never had a failure I'm aware of.

I had real good success preheating cast and welding with 7018 while it's hot. When I'm done welding I heat it it up again and then cover it up in ash from my fireplace. Some bigger pieces were to hot to hold with my hands after 15 hours in the ash. I've had much better success then welding with nickel.

Bronze or pure cast iron. Have fixed a lot of things that have all the above mentioned wonder rods. Have to grind all that crap out and braze it. Especially on manifolds!!!!!
