Default My first light plant. Onan W2C

Hey all I'm kinda new around here and wanted to say hello. Ive been into antique equipment all of my life and lately I've taken a interest in antique electric plants and stationary power units. I happened upon this one on the good ol craigslist for cheep so I bought it. the guy I bought it off of said it hasent ran since June of 1988...oddly enough the year and month I was born, but its been stored inside in a fairly dry building. its a Wards Powerlite 2kw 115 v ac set, its in pretty good shape with all the original decals and most of the original paint. ill pose some pictures and get the serial numbers off it tomorrow. i am wondering what it will take to get the generator side back in to safe operation before i try to get the engine fired up.
Thanks, Brandon

Greetings & welcome to the 'Stak.
These came in several forms. Do you have electric starting - has a control box over the gen head, or is it manual with magneto ignition?
Pictures & numbers help.
Manual for a similar model is here:
http://www.oldengine.org/members/die...anualMenu1.htm
Several people here have these. Some have several...

Hopefully there is a cast end bell cover on the tail end of the generator. Remove that and look for rodent nests. Don't wiggle wires unnecessarily, but carefully check the brushes. Look for short (worn out), sticking, broken ones, bent or broken springs, or if the wire is loose. Open the control box cover and check for rodents there, too. Very simple system.
Good luck, Have fun & Show your work.

mine is an electric start model. ill try to get the numbers off of it tomorrow and a few pictures, im not at the shop now. the id tag is in excellent shape so everything on it is legible. the plant is pretty complete with all the covers and screens. the radiator is leaking so i pulled it apart to get it repaired, everything so far has came apart nicely. there are no nests built that i have found yet, the control box is fairly clean for sitting for 25 years, i did notice that the wiring looks pretty suspicions. the fabric insulation is pretty rotten and conductors are showing so that will need addressed for sure. i haven't dug any deeper than that yet. are there parts still available to rebuild the carb and fuel pump?

build date of April 1946. They are a very nice antique unit.
Nice find.

Expect to find the insulation wrapping on the majority of the wires breaking down at that age. You can still get "NEW repro cloth covered wiring from a few different vendors such as brillmans , who is a sponsor here at the stak.

If you don't care about the cloth covered wiring, put marine grade stranded tinned wire in and it will be good for another 70 years

Well Here she is. Its the only pictures I have at the moment. Got the radiator to the shop today so hopefully he can fix it. I think I'm gonna leave this one all original since its got alot of good paint on it. Ill look into the correct wire but we use tinned machine tool wire at work. . . And thats free lol

Yes thats what i was thinking it will need a degreasing though. I rolled the engine over by hand, good compression and everything felt free so I think it'll run with out much trouble

The cloth covered wire used is typically "varnished cambric". That was all we had to work with before plastic was invented! I would try to keep this fine speciman as original as possible.

I plan on leaving it pretty much just as it looks. Ill be in Portland next weekend so ill look for the correct wire there. I'm going to try to gently degrease it tonight
