Default Where Are all the Onans Coming from

Hi Guys

Its crazy how many Onan are on CL in my area. There is a 4K emerald plus for 150 needing a control board. And another probably a 4BGA or along that line for 100 judging by pic. The second one hasn't been cranked in a year. I'm tempted to get both and have winter projects. Anyone else seeing a surge of Onans popping up in there area

there are over eight million stories [naked city]

some just quit [never did that B4]
many have sat awaiting the round-tuit
they all started the wait in "some" condition.

provenance is important
CAVEAT EMPTOR

unless running and making rated power it is worth scrap value.
except to those seeking spare stuff for their ones that do work.
or a project for the spare parts they have [may-be not need]

but there are a lot of them made over the years
and people saved them like vintage cars.
it was over 30 yrs "historic" when I sold this 15 yrs ago
http://www.peaknet.net/~gatewayz/html/armand.html
B4 the equestrian hobby, B4 the green remission.

the 6.5 KW NH is now my daughters stand by.
I knew the motor home's low hour history
and the fellow who stored it and I got it "free"
it is a 1978 survivor needing only Battery, points, plugs, fuel pump, and filters.
optionally I did a bit more, but kept the green lunacy to under $750

IS THIS A GREAT HOBBY OR WHAT

If any emerald (RV) gen has been sitting for months, clean slip rings to protect $$AC voltage reg from dieing on startup.

In my area there seems to be no increase in the number of Onans for sale on CL. As far as where they came from is only a guess, but since many, if not all, seen on CL have been out of commission/production for years I can only assume they were bought and stored away. They could have been saved for Y2K after decommissioned from commercial/industrial use, but never needed and never used since then, or sourced after various hurricanes from the past, stored away and never used until the owners or contractors did a cleanout of their garages and basements.

In the case of my JB, I know 100% where it came from and what is was used for (a school in Pa and used for emergency lighting). Based of actual run time hours on it's clock, and the programming for exercising on the clock in it's ATS among other documents, it was decommissioned right before Y2K and stored away until I bought it last January.

I love to always track down the history and stories of thing I owned including my Onans.

On the Emerals guessing they were mostly made in late 70's early 80s. They were likely mostly mounted in RVs. So RV would be ~ 35 years old now, maybe beat and musty ready for scrap yard. Take the gen and good parts out before scraping. Plus their owners might be 60-70 now and not interested in traveling the 4 corners of the world anymore, might prefer to stay near their doctor and family.

Kindof a drought around here, at the moment. They made millions for the RV market, but they seem to come in waves.. Commercial backups and firehouse/truck Onans are the best I'll buy a non-runner for $100, but I stick to RPM-regulated models.

There a literally a dozen Onans within a 150 mile radius on CL. There is a variety around. That 10CW for 400 is still not sold and its on a small trailer. Once you go into AR the price of the Onans goes way up.

I am in Texas and OK is a favorite stumping ground for me to get compressors and generators.
