Default Drips per minute, 20 hp Ball?

Hi all, I have a 20 hp Ball oilfield engine and the cross slide is obvious and the crank has chain oilers but when i think of that huge piston getting a tiny drop??? This engine will be running a cider mill and press but not working too hard, what should i set the oilers for the cylinder and crank?

I don't believe in counting drips. These cylinders and pistons are large and require a lot of oil, the cylinders and rings are not at there best. You need that oil to seal the rings and cylinders. I use heavy oil and use about a quart in 5 hours of run time. I also have a water leak into the cylinder, makes for a real attention getter, for the first start up in the morning. Take 3 hits and belch 2 to 3 Qt of water out the 4 inch stack straight up. Yep, sometimes you get it, and sometimes you don't, forgot to check the wind.

Ha ha, wow I can only imagine! Sounds like it has it's own personality for sure I can only find non detergent oil in 30 weight and even that is getting hard to find but summed it up in saying 1 quart in 5 hours, Thanks Bob

What type of oiler does the engine use? If Powel-Boson, SAE 50 oil and 1 drop per inch of cylinder diameter bore per minute. If 8" cylinder bore - 8 drops/minute. 10" bore - 10 drops etc. SAE 30 is probably too thin for these big engine cylinders.

NAPA auto parts can get up to SAE 80 in non detergent oil - you have to ask for it. Cheaper to buy by the case too. They also have up to SAE 50 in detergent oils as well in these big 2 stroke engines, it won't matter which one you use as a cylinder oil. If your engine were a 4 stroke, I would not use a detergent oil in it.

If you get liquid oil out the exhaust, as the engine is running, you are probably getting enough oil. No oil - probably running a bit dry on oil. If you can get a look at the piston thru the exhaust port, it should appear wet with oil. If dry, add more oil!

Also,i believe that if the cylinder is over-oiled that can lead to coking in the cylinder that creates hot-spots that can cause pre-ignition (dieseling). So more isnt always better.

The correct formula for power cylinder oil is HP*8*24/OEM Constant = PPD. The factory probably guessed or had some sort of verification method for drops. The richest 2 cycle OEM BHP/PPD is 4800, the leanest is 10000. So for your engine it would be 1 Pint per day at full load using the richest constant and .48 Pint per day using the leanest constant at full load.

SO somehow I misread the HP to be 25, instead of 20. In any case it would be 20*8*24/4800 or 20*8*24/10000 which would be .08 PPD Rich, .38 PPD lean.

If your going to stay with a drop feed richest would be 8 drops per minute, and leanest would be 3.8 drops per minute.
