Most likely the ignition RUN contact has gone bad, but the START portion of the switch is still good.

If it runs AFTER you hot-wire the ignition, then start it, then your switch is just bad.

My AED has 2 separate toggle switchs. one is ignition on/off and the second is a momentary switch to engage the starter.

Try hotwiring it and see if it will run then.

For older small engines, there's two different types of ignition switches out there...

One type requires the switch to have a contact closed to B+, so that the ignition to get power (battery coil, etc) to run.

The other type requires the ignition switch to be grounded when the engine is to STOP... a magneto or CDI system.

That's more complicated nowdays, on my Honda 25hp, it requires B+ to the carbeurator fuel solenoid, and another contact to GROUND the ignition module to run.

I've found more than once, that someone had a problem with a machine, changed a few components, got frustrated and walked away... and either they never suspected the switch, OR... they got the wrong switch. Easy for either to happen. ;-) Glad you got it figured out!!!

IIRC, at least some AEAD-series welders had a set of contacts in the oil pressure switch that
killed the ignition if the oil pressure wasn't high enough. Might be worth checking

it only has 2 working speeds one is higher than the other. off the top of my head the generator speed should be around 1800 and the weld speed should be 3600?

If yours has the auto idle it will idle down if the switch is in the right position. There should be a weld/power toggle and an auto idle off on toggle. With the auto toggle on it will idle down from weld speed but idle speed may still be 1800. I don't recall what idle speed is..

My old rope start Airco Wasp only has two speeds. weld and power. just a big lever to change speeds.

I just checked the book. Shoulda done that first.

Idle speed for a 60hz machine is 1860rpms this is the power/generator speed. Weld speed is 3000rpms.

If you haven't yet. go to the Miller website and download the manual for your welder. lots of good info there. all you need is the serial number. Miller is pretty good at having the manuals for free on the website.
