Default Towmotor Model 540 G truck

I have a towmotor model 540 , sn 540600134 ,type G truck , spec# 111 . Have had this 6000 lb.lift for some time , used it for transferring barrels of spray foam , only use it a bit now but my issue although it starts and runs fine is that it burns oil so bad , even outside it just is to much. The engine just runs and works great if i keep the plugs clean . Originally it ran on gasoline then was swapped to propane, then back to gasoline ,and again after sourcing parts to rebuild propane system is now back on propane which i like for inside . My problem is i cant seem to get a positive as to what this engine is , all i know is its a 6 cyl. Flathead , valve and block engine with the distributor coming out the top between #4 and #5 cylinders . I have a few pics. That i will try to post . I have searched around but cant find info i am looking for . Any help would be great . Thankyou.

It is a F600series Continental. By changing the bore size the displacement changed. One of the more popular ones was the F-226 engine.

I wouldn't go to Cat for parts, I would go to NAPA. First you should find out what engine it is, the Continental 226 is pretty common engine. It should have a tag I think on the side of the block.

On the side of the block where you put the oil in there is normally a tag which has the engine model on it.

Clean crud from area indicated. That appears to be the tag hiding underneath.

This is what i have found , no tags , without my calipers the pistons are 30thou. Over and with tape measure out to 3,3/16 inches. Haven't checked stroke length yet . Oil actually ran out of intake , cylinders seem very smooth , no ring marks or scoring . There is a bit of a ring ridge not bad though, maybe just a set of rings and some valve work .. Next i guess pull engine and open it up to check pistons .cant believe how nice it ran .

Ok. On pistons the top ring had no dots or taper . Second had both a dot and taper , both were installed facing down . Third was installed with taper down but had the oil ring back up . The oil ring was installed without back up which i think would explain the huge oil consumption . Rod brg. Were ok , wrist pins are nice . Pistons are 30 over rods are also 30 over . I think with ring ridge removed , glaze taken off cyl. Walls , new rings and rod brg. With gasket set should set o it . Pistons show very little wear . Any input is appreciated . Still not a hint of engine numbers .

The second ring should have the dot and taper up. I'm not sure about the third ring, maybe the taper down. The oil ring is a three piece, the ends of the thin rings should be 90 degrees from the gap of the center ring and 180 degrees from each other.

Are you talking about the third ring in the second picture from the left? That should go under the third ring. That ring looks like an oil ring.

Yes the 7 sided piece. I thought hat was a backup for the oil ring. It was behind the third ring

Finally have found some numbers just above oil pan on valve side. Some of the casting numbers are as follows. f 209A405S. B13U there is a 7 right at the front that has been stamped in . The numbers where 209 and 405 are have been ground off and stamped with these numbers i think you can tell in the pics . Like i mentioned pistons are 30 thou over and measure 3 3/16 .
