Default U6501 Continental 6 cylider gas engine

Hi, have an old (1940's) U6501 Continental 6 cylinder gas engine out of an 1940's Holabird Fire Truck that needs rod and main bearings .020 undersize.

Also need head gasket though there is a company I can have copy it.

Any idea where a set of rod and main bearing .020 might be located or who to call?

would like to get this engine back together so the fire dept can do the rest of the work on it getting it ready for parades.

Or any ideas what engine I could adapt to it that parts are easier to get?

Has a large diameter bell housing and nothing in my area has anything this large.

Thanks in advance for some direction or suggestions.

O. K. do you dimensions for the crankshaft as in diameter and width of the bearings? I need to do some thinking as well as some of those large
Continental engines were also used by the military and you may need to check with dealers of military engine parts.

I will dig my manual out again, but best I remember both rod and mains were the same size as for the shaft diameter thought the outside of the shells were different.

I'll hunt the manual tomorrow and give exact measurements.

That U6501 seems to've been one of Cont'ls "individual" engines, meaning there doesn't seem to be a U-series of engines, only the U6501 "automotive", the U501 "Ind'l" (and possibly a PR501 Power Unit--see below) per Cont'l terminology of the period...
A couple bearing catalogs state it only shares bearings with the 22R up to #12264 and the late 33R. The 22R seems to've been a considerably more popular engine, at least in over-the-road trucks, as most of my period catalogs don't list these Us. I don't have anything on the 33R...
The PR501 listing is in a 38 Victor gasket catalog under "models 22R, 33R, 35B, PR501"...that catalog doesn't list the U6501 or U501, unusual unless this engine originally introduced as that Power Unit and then later used in other eqpmt???
As to engine swaps try Garrad Moon at Monte's, northwest of Chicago now but emails the same;

That would be correct.

Here are some numbers according to the service manual I have on this engine:
Industrial#s U501
Transportation #s: U6501

According to the manual standard size for both rod and main bearings are: 2.7485/ 2.7475 (crank pin)

Bore and Stroke: 4 1/2 X 5 1/4

The manual also gives the outer sizes of each main bearing shell as well as the outer diameters and width of the rod bearing shells.

That is what we need! The diameter of the mains and the rods plus the width and what do they use for a thrust bearing + the housing bores of the mains and the connecting rods.

As they appear in the manual
Main Bearing- Front 2 3/4 X 1 3/4
Main Bearing - (4) Int. 2 3/4 X 1 11/16
Main Bearing - Center 2 3/4 X 2 13/16
Main Bearing - Rear 2 3/4 X 2 13/16
Rear Main Bearing also controls the thrust.

This manual also gives the bore of the hole for the bearings as well as bearing thickness:
Mains bore in the block 2.9420 / 2.9410 Thickness .0957 / .0952 Wear limits - .0947
Diam of main bearing journal: 2.7485/2.7475

Con Rod Bearing Diam and length 2 3/4 X 1 13/16
Con rod bearing bore: 2.8745/2.8740
Con crank journal dia: 2.7485/2.7475

Received an e-mail this morning that maybe these parts have been located, but will take a couple more days to confirm.

If so... WOW!

So don't take all your time up burying your heads in the books, maybe (maybe) there are some hiding out there yet.

FWIW, just noted slight?? discrepancy in my only two bearing catalogs that list the U6501; don't know if applicable to yours...
1956 Fed-Mog Shop Specs manual, 9th Ed, 126 pgs lists "...U6501, 22R to #12264, 33R, U501.." and lists a thrust washer used on rear of #1 main...
1962 Thompson Products brg catalog B-66, 177 pgs, lists "...U501, U6501, 22R 3rd Series (exc Federal truck) 33R (late)..." This catalog has no mention of thrust washer.
Thompson also has note---Fed trk after #12265 uses a different #4 main, the locking lip location 11/32 from end versus 13/16 from end of non-Federal trk bearing...
Neither catalog has any other listing for any of the above engines...
Like many others, I often railed about parts people coming up with the wrong parts; since using these old catalogs, with their discrepancies, I'm surprised they came up with the right ones as often as they did...

No thrust washer behind first main bearing on this engine. Same general shape as a Chevy 350 thrust bearing at the rear, just quite a bit larger.

Can't figure out if I can delete the last post or not, but I will have to eat crow on that one. There are two thrust washers at the first main bearing cap, one in front of the cap and one behind the cap.

The rear main is just a regular bearing, no thrust sides to it after all.

So your are correct and I was not on that. My bad.

The manual also shows a "shim pack" with differing thicknesses of shims along with one think washer in the front of the bearing and one on the rear of the bearing.
