Default 1/4 scale 1978 Rider Hot Air Engine Kit

hello all. i have recently got an old hot air engine model from a friend. dated 1978 , castings and prints by norbert keeley ohio. he did tell me it was missing some parts. i had the time to check everything out and it looks im missing the firebox, firebox door and the water pump? i have the drawings for everything. was wondering also if these kits were sold possibly with a gasket kit? i would assume these models can only be used with natural or propane gas? would anybody or staker out there have spare parts around for this that i need? maybe best i call Myers models to see if they sell these parts?

The firebox and door, you can order from Myers Models. The water pump will have to be made by you or someone else.

On an engine that old, the firebox and door would have been fabricated. You should have drawing that shows all the parts and the flat pattern for the sheet metal. There was a pretty good article in the book Steam and Stirling (Village Press) that showed the firebox fabrication.

As Heller indicated you can probably purchase the cast aluminum parts from Myers. I'm not completely sure; but think the fire box castings were something that Clarence Myers did after he took over the engine from Norbert Kelley.

started the 1/4 scale project. the norbert kelley castings not too bad. just my tooling is from the 1940s. the 12" regal isnt no cadillac.. but still gets the job done.

Your work looks real good so far.
Is that flywheel aluminum like on the newer ones.
Mine was built by Kent Smith in 2002.

Gil, the flywheel is cast aluminum. The engine is just about 1/2 finished. I put it to the side right now with my summer projects going on. Will post pics when I'm down the homestretch. Shawn

we had some time to tinker with the 1/4 scale. had a problem, was cleaning of the work table and accidentally dropped the walking beam! well, it broke! Didn't know what to do, called Myers and they helped me big time! I was fortunate enough that they had a spare walking beam to send me.

That must have been some fall! I didn't realize that that casting was so brittle Andrew dropped my engine and bent the hoop that goes from the cylinder to the flywheel (BOO HISS). Will try and straighten it out. See you at Jacktown??? Mr Smith - the Woodpecker guy built mine. was POed he couldn't get it to run for more than a minute or so, at a time. I hooked the pump up to a water supply, and it ran fine. He was even more POed after that! I got it relatively cheap because for him, it didn't work!

On mine, I took a PEAK camping propane stove burner and modified it so that a hose could be hooked to a propane regulator from a Coleman stove. flame height could be regulated from there. The burner was mounted under the hot section on the engine, inside the fire box. The chimney was made of a copper 3/4" ell and a 1' piece of 3/4" type L copper tubing, painted high heat grill black (semi gloss) If you make your own check balls for the pump, make them out of Teflon or brass. John made mine out of steel, and if I let the engine sit a while, I have to take it apart to free the check balls up! You probably could get them already made from Lee Pederson, if you have the diameter. lee has a selection of checkballs. For a cooling reservoir, I used a brass tank (capacity about 1 Qt, and a home made radiator, made out of 1/4" copper tubing and some copper wire for heat disapation.

Andrew. yeah, you really wouldn't think that the walking beam casting was that brittle to break. It had to fall on a spot that was 1 in a million. lol. Thanks for the check ball info. Hope you get the hoop fixed on your engine. couple fresh pics. the new beam is done
