Default Case Steam Engine Horsepower

Colin

You were wondering about the confusion when J.I.Case said; All Case Steam Engines will develop at least 10% more B.H.P. than rated, then using their formula, subtracting 10% off of the indicated horsepower to get brake horspower?
Case never made this claim on the older engines, which operated at 130 psi, except the 32 h.p. which was 160 psi. Case made this claim with the later model engines, and upped the steam pressure on the 20-60 & 25-75 h.p.'s to 140 psi . . . same as the 30 h.p., and all others were 150 psi, with exception to the 110 h.p. at 160 psi.
I calculated the B.H.P. on the old style and new style engines at brake horsepower . . . not indicated, so you can see the 10% increase!

OLD STYLE
9 hp (7 1/4" x 10" cyl.) @ 130 psi b.h.p. 30.5
12 hp (8 1/4" x 10" cyl.) @ 130 psi b.h.p. 39.5
15 hp (9" x 10" cyl.) @ 130 psi b.h.p. 47
20 hp (10" x 10" cyl.) @ 130 psi b.h.p. 58
25 hp (11" x 11" cyl.) @ 130 psi b.h.p. 77
32 hp (12" x 12" cyl.) @ 160 psi b.h.p. 123

NEW STYLE
30 hp (7 1/4" x 10" cyl.) @ 140 psi b.h.p. 33
40 hp (8 1/4" x 10" cyl.) @ 150 psi b.h.p. 46
50 hp (9" x 10" cyl.) @ 150 psi b.h.p. 54
60 hp (10" 10" cyl.) @ 140 psi b.h.p. 62.5
65 hp (10" x 11" cyl.) @ 150 psi b.h.p. 74
75 hp (11" x 11" cyl.) @ 140 psi b.h.p. 83
80 hp (11" x 11" cyl.) @ 150 psi b.h.p. 89
110 hp (12" x 12" cyl.) @ 160 psi b.h.p. 123

The 50 & 60 hp came up a little short on the 10%, but no big deal!

Colin, did the 75 and 80 hp use the same engine, or was there a difference between the two?

I am quite sure that the pressure on the 30 was later upped to 150 too, but am wondering if the 60s and 75s stayed at 140 right to the end of production of those two sizes?

that sounds right chuck, but i think that a lot of later 75s that came up here had a slightyl heavier boiler and were allowed 153 lbs, the lap 80 they had here was alowed 160 even. not sure if the 60s were allowed 150 or not but the book says the lap 40s and 50s had 150 in 1913. maybe the formula worked out better with the smaller barells on them? the 75 and 80 used the same 11X11 cylinder
