Smile McDonald Super Diesel SE

Hi, Does anyone have an idea of what oil ought to be used in the crankcase of this engine. The original manual just says Macsdiesel Cylinder Oil. Any help appreciated, Thanks.

Hello Choofer,
The original oil sold by MacDonald would most
likely have been a single grade (SAE30 or 40) non-detergent
oil, which may stiil be available, but hard to find. It was also
accompanied by their instruction to drain and wash out crank-
case regularly, as the non-detergent oil allowed carbon and
dirt to settle to the bottom of the sump and not remain in
suspension as with modern detergent oils.
The old Macs do collect a lot of soot in the oil, but as long
as you do a good job of washing out the sump with say kerosine
,rag and a brush, a good modern multigrade diesel oil (say 15W/
40) should be fine, and allow easier cranking when cold. They are
a remarkably tough old motor.
As an aside, I have an SE almost complete, but need the
valve rocker gear and pushrod, springs etc to get it going,so
if you know where I might track down these parts I would be
most grateful. My ultimate find would be a CE capable of
restoration, as I could probably run it on waste oil with some
kero or jet fuel added. Enjoy your SE, great old motor!
Regards, Combustor.

Thumbs up Re: McDonald Super Diesel SE

Thanks Combuster, for the info. Yes the Mac is a delightful engine to run...in the open! I don't have the parts you need, but will keep an eye out at swap meets, etc for them. I if find them I will contact you.
