Default Rack and Pinion Down Under

Hi,

I have spent the last couple of weeks putting the rack and pinion together after being dismantled for the trip from the UK.

This is number 4, the last of the ones we built and has never been rallied. Started it today, in 40 deg C heat. In England they would run for at least an hour with no cooling tank and barely get warm, today I ran it for less than 1/2 an hour before having to stop the engine. Luckily the shed roof was just high enough, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to run it with total fire ban in force across the state.

Hope to have it finished and running at Lake Goldsmith in May. I suspect it has been some time since one of these engines has run in Australia.

Regards,
Wayne

Hi Wayne
It's good to see your rack back together and running, would I be right in thinking it is the only running atmospheric engine in Oz?I know that there are a couple of racks in the Power House museum but do you think that this type of engine ever worked in Oz?
Have you made a new flexi plate for the valve as we never got round to making a spring steel one for your engine.
Nice looking base again, what sort of wood is it and how did the price of the wood compary with the bases you made here in the uk? Dave

Hi Dave,

I have seen some original literature which indicates the Crossley rack and pinions did work in Australia, in fact the one in the Powerhouse could have been imported for work in this country.

I intend to buy a suitable handsaw or brickies trowel to cut the flexi-plate out of. Not sure what the wood is it is referred to as F17, fairly standard building material over here. There is about $250 AUD in that base. Wood prices are pretty comparable.

It is the only one over here running that I know of.

Regards,

Wayne
