Default Old School Band Filers

I'm looking for some stories on how band filers were used, likely in die making?? Grob made one they called the FAB-18, and some DoAll bandsaws could accept band files. I assume band filers and die filers went extinct pretty much at the same time? I've seen them referred to as "lappers". None of the band files that I have are that fine--was there a different meaning?

I have used my Grob band filer on a wide variety of materials-phenolic, steel, aluminum, etc.- without issues. Slow stock removal, but friendly to work on. More of a "get it to fit" type machine- at least the way I use it.

Any recollections would be appreciated-------
