Default NEW SERVER - On Line 2012

We are now in our twenty second year on the web, hosting the oldest running classified ad web site for antique engine enthusiasts. Our ad pages have delivered well over 1,000,000 ads and we archive over 1,300,000 related messages from 92,000 registered users with well over 250,000 engine photos. In order to keep up with web site demand, we have graduated through a number of hosts and web servers. Our newest web server is located in Atlanta at a carrier grade, state of the art data center with redundant UPS, air conditioning, generator backup and smoke detection/fire protection systems. The facility is under 24/7 remote camera surveillance and security guard patrol. The server is connected to the Internet through several gigabit Ethernet links from six separate backbone providers, who each run fiber optic cable into the data center through two separate entry points.

Default Re: New Server in Progress

Old-engine.com and flywheelers.com among others are now moved onto the new server.

Things are bound to get broken because of the IP numbers being changed. If you see something that doesn't work as before, click my name in the upper left corner and let me know.

Enginads.com and Smokstak.com will be the final two to move. I will need to shut things down during the move and I will most likely do this late at night when I can fit it into the schedule.

It's creepy, scary and overall, an adrenaline rush. It's amazing how much I've forgotten in five or so years, but it's all coming back. It also helps to have a good control panel and Google to answer questions.

Speed improvement wise, this should help us during the high load evening hours. Hopefully, we will also benefit from a reliability boost as this should carry us forward for a few years. We haven't done so bad though, as our old server Linux uptime of 463 days speaks for itself.

As you can see on the above post, (4) 300 gig drives should equal 1.2 Terrrabytes, BUT this is a RAID 10 or 1+0 layout so the drives are all volume merged and we end up with the following...
Filesystem|Size|Used|Avail|Use%|Mounted on
/dev/sda5| 9.7G| 605M| 8.6G| 7%| /
/dev/sda8| 996M| 34M| 911M| 4%| /tmp
/dev/sda7| 509G| 716M| 482G| 1%| /home
/dev/sda3| 9.7G| 618M| 8.6G| 7%| /var
/dev/sda2| 9.7G| 4.1G| 5.2G| 44%| /usr
/dev/sda1| 99M| 18M| 76M| 20%| /boot
tmpfs| 5.9G| 0| 5.9G| 0%| /dev/shm
/home is where the page files sit and 509G ain't bad.

Our old /home was /dev/sdc1 135G 24G 105G 19% full

We'll see just how long this new server lasts!

Default NEW SERVER - On Line

After an over-nighter until 7 AM I got it running for the most part. Unfortunately, I missed leaving a message on the old server...

Clearing Your DNS Cache

Your DNS cache stores the locations (IP addresses) of pages you have recently viewed. If the location of the page changes before the entry in your DNS cache is updated, you will be unable to access the page. Once you clear your DNS cache, your computer will query nameservers for the new DNS information you require.

The methods detailed below allow you to remove old and inaccurate DNS information that may result in 404 errors.

Windows® XP, 2000, or Vista®
Open the Start menu.
Go to Run.
If you do not see the Run command in Vista, search for "run" in the Search bar.
In the Run text box, type: ipconfig /flushdns <<<---- SPACE REQUIRED BEFORE /
Press Enter or Return, and your cache will be flushed.

MacOS®
Go to Applications.
Go to Utilities.
Open the Terminal application.
Type: dscacheutil -flushcache
Press Enter or Return, and your cache will be flushed.

You may need to REBOOT your computer.

You can tell where you are by checking our front pages. www.smokstak.com or www.enginads.com and in the upper left corner, you will see OLD or NEW Server.

I keep the good ol' c:\ icon on my desktop.

Right now, I'm dealing with stuff like this...

Warning: preg_replace() [function.preg-replace]: Delimiter must not be alphanumeric or backslash in /home/enginads/public_html/classifieds/pp-inc.php on line 2024

Warning: preg_replace() [function.preg-replace]: No ending delimiter '_' found in /home/enginads/public_html/classifieds/pp-inc.php on line 2033

The php versions are different PHP 5.2.8 (cli) (built: Feb 26 2009
22:58:37) on the old server PHP 5.3.9 (cli) (built: Jan 27 2012 00:42:24) on the
new server, tons of scripts are not compatible with php 5.3.

Hopefully, I can fix the bugs and not need to roll back to 5.2.8.

Woooow Harry,

This was a hard one for me and have been almost the hole day busy with it.
Almost comit suicide .

The text on the front page kept me busy.
If you have one of the Windows System then go to start and then i came in to an swamp.

Specialy for the viewers outside the U.S. it coult be a little blurry.

After a long time Henric have open his laptop and this one worked.

Then i have shutdown my Computer and restart and then the problem was over.

Wel i am not going to say what to do but i think there are still some viewers having problems with this.

Maby it is better to wright on you front page.

Restart your computer !.

Wel i am happy back now and glad to see you all again.
So you all do not have to worry or cry that we are missing.

Greatings and thanks and best regards and glad Harry that you have fixed the system now,
You are a trooper !!.
Chris

Smooth switch

I enjoyed reading the new server specs: if the hard drives are spinning for a whole year at 15'700rpm and there are 525'949 minutes in a year they will make 8'257'399'300 revolutions in one year. The diameter of the disk is 67mm hence its circumference will be 210.5mm. So over one year a point on the edge of the disk will travel 1'738'072'793'568mm. As there are 1'609'344mm in 1 mile that will equate to 1'079'988 miles or 43 laps of the equator.

Think your gonna need to pour some babbit in them bearings before the years out Harry! And big thanks to you of course

Joe

Hi Harry,

Nice job, everything is extremely fast and works well. I've pulled all nighters before and there usually isn't any book to follow or if there is the chapter you need is missing.
