Default 1982 Dayton 3000 Watt Generator Model #w178

Hi All,
Due to very little info available, I thought I would try here for help.
I have contacted Grainger Supply as suggested by other posts and have not received a response, that was Thursday so it may take a while.

Dayton Electric Mfg. 3000 W 120/240 ph1
Model# #w178 Ser# not readable,
Briggs and stratton 8 HP.
190412 - 1782 - 02 - 820317

This Genset was mounted on a Telco line truck, it was intact and complete.
After rehabbing engine, carb and tank it fired right up and was producing power.
An occasional Blue flame / spark shot from the inside of control end, after opening I found the Terminal Board / Brush holder cracked and weathered.
Along with one of the leads hitting the rotor and arcing, also a couple of the resets broken.

If anyone has info on this unit, parts list, part numbers etc. it would be a great help for me and any others searching........ Thanks' Dan

Sorry, The Model Number is 3W178

Many of the Dayton generators were made by Winco. I doubt you will get any support much from Grainger. I have a 3 Kw made by Winco and an 8 Kw Dayton that is a rebadged Winco. Post a picture or two and maybe somebody can I D it for you.

I received a response from Grainger Support, they did have a Operation and Parts List in PDF.

The part I need is X65RF-026 Brush holder. and according to the support response the unit was made by DESA ? found a desa online but no luck with part #

Here is a little better pic of board / brush holder
If worse case I could make one from fiberglass but rather find a replacement.

The 3W178 is covered in the Intertec Small AC Generator service manual 2nd edition 1986 (pages 14-16) but doesn't show much useful information. In one diagram they show the brush holder as part number 4, but other then a wiring schematic and hints on cleaning the slip rings there is not much there.

I appreciate your response, and letting me know what you found.

DESA went out of business a while back, but some of the old stock might be around still.. I am checking into that and playing the waiting game.

Everything else checks out well, would be well worth replacing or making a new holder / board.

Thanks' Dan

Pincor gbrf-30h2 or GBBT series comes very close, but after some digging I found the same Brush Holder part # in the parts list along with the same breaker #s. .... Let me guess that pincor is NLA as well ??

Thanks' for the ID, and I will keep looking for a supplier Dayton - DESA - Pincor

Brush Holder X65RF- 026 (X65RF026)

Breakers 22616-004 30 A

Well after many emails and calls, its a no go on the brush holder / board replacement.

After removing it (in three pieces) it was cleaned and inspected !

I super glued the board back together first, then took some light (.25 OZ)fiberglass cloth and some 30 Min Epoxy. Laid strips both horz & Vert. wrapping around from front to back and side to side, once set it made a very solid repair. the thickness of the board was increased a bit, but allowed the brushes to better align on the slip rings.

Also some of the reset breakers available at a local electrical supply worked just fine, and look almost identical to originals.

I will put a few more hours of run time on it, but so far its working well.

Now onto a 80's Powermate............ Thanks All' Dan
