I don't have a horse in the race but I'd bet around $8500. Jason

Hi

I got one off Ebay several years ago that looked better than that one in the pictures and it turned out to be in very bad condition.

It took me a year to repair it so I could use it.

Here is a picture of me running it in the front yard.

thanks for posting the great vid of your traction engine,
what did you have to do to your engine to get it into running condition?
I recently purchased a one third scale case and have to do some refurbishing myself, nothing too serious, governor work and a little tinkering here and there. I will run the engine a few times and do a tear down and repaint This year.

Hi

The first thing I did was clean the fire box and smoke box out. Apparently the last time it was run they fired it on coal and the firebox was designed for wood. Whoever was operating it didn’t understand the difference and had put too much coal in and blocked the draft. The unit must have just been put in the barn and left for several years. The smoke box had a birds nest in it.

I Borescope the boiler and found the tubes and boiler shell had some deterioration but nothing serious. I could see the line on the inside where the water had been left but even this was not more than a few thousands deep.

The real problem was the cannon shaft was frozen and I had to remove it to even get the unit on the trailer I picked it up with.

Then I had to replace all feed water lines because they were all rotted out. The feed water pump was so corroded I finally added external check valves and replaced the piston rod.

Then the cleats that were on the bottom of the wheel were it sat came off because the rivets had corroded.

Unfortunately in the video I had forgotten to close the cylinder cocks other than that that was the first run of any duration and the finish of the repair project.

Hey Phil,
thanks for sharing your experiences.
I fired my engine last Sunday, One of the set screws in the governor had loosened off, and allowed the valve in the governor to be sucked downward into the governor body. I had to file a flat spot on the rod that controls the valve, in order to give the set screw more bite. a little trial and error to get the valve set right for proper operation , but once properly set the engine gave me no trouble at all. We were then able to let my girlfriend's 6 year old daughter run the engine around the yard,,,, smiles all around.. she says it's more fun than running our train. Big bird.
