Photo Lauson L-50 Military Engine, Are They Rare?

I just purchased a Lauson L-50 engine. It was told by the owner to be a 1954 (he had badly deteriorated papers with it) and was told it has maybe a couple hours at the most run time on it. He had two of them and the other was even in its crate still when he had it but he sold that one years ago.

I thought about selling it, but before I do, I have some wonders about it, but can't seem to find any info on evilbay or even here to let me know much about it, nor any idea of value.

The base at the rear, four studs in the block and tapered crank let me think it was a generator? Also, why does it have a damper/shutter(?) on the cowl at the rope start end, is it to Preheat faster? Then there is a chamber on the bottom that is ducted up under the carb, it also has an opening on the muffler side, is this a carb preheater/deicer of some sort? I've checked it and the mag is still hot, the last time it did any running was with a soda can fuel tank when this last owner and my brother started it pushing five or so years back, we kind of had been wondering about it since and now that it's mine, I'm real curious.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

I'd wonder if it was for a jet engine or other air plan engine warmer/fan. By using the air of the engine that is heated and blown through a fan back into the jet/ air plane engine to warm it up and preheat it?

I have a military standard engine with special ducting and instructions for cold weather operation. I suspect that is what you have. Ken
