Default Maytag 1 hp Spark Plug?

Anyone know what style spark plug was used in the 1 hp Maytag's from the factory. I'm thinking it wasn't the long reach take apart plugs like the Champion 34's but maybe more like the Champion X? Anybody know for sure? Just going by Original drawings/pictures I've seen. Kevin

Tom S. or Mark Shulaw probably have your answer. The Champion 34 gas Engine Special and the Maytag script plugs came later on (late 19 teens - 20s), like when the 82 and 92 versions came out. The X may have been more period, but even that may have been a later' plug (19-teens).

Hi Kevin. The first style Champ X plugs were made in 1911. They had smooth sided porcelains and no extension below the threads. I have these for sale if needed. Later, about 1920 they made a #7 which had two ribs on the porcelain and a longer reach like the newer X plugs, this then became the #31 a few years later. I have these for sale as well. The #31 is a dedicated gas engine plug and is hotter than the X, although they look the same.Hope this helps, Lanny Baron, 516-426-1098

I thought that the uprights ceased production in the area of 1918 or so - during the model 82 and 'mason jar' engine production?

Andrew, my understanding is they continued the uprights into the early 1920's. It seems that nobody knows the exact year it was ceased. Probably also the 1/2 hp uprights ceased before the 1 hp uprights I would think. This since the 1 hp was not used in the washing machine production. My two cents worth. Kevin

The Elgin 1 HP engine was developed prior to 1915. Maytag bought Elgin in 1916 and moved the production to Newton in March of 1916. After this date they would have been labeled Maytag. I have seen advertising on the Moto-Mower with the 1 HP Maytag engine of 1921 and 1922. There is one listed on eBay noting it was from 1926 National Geographic magazine. I doubt this is the correct date on it as I have seen Moto-Mower ads of 1924 with Briggs & Stratton engines on them. They could have offered Maytag or Briggs & Stratton in 1924 and later but I also doubt that. I would guess last 1 HP uprights would have been in 1922 or 1923.

Sparky, the #7's I saw had small 18mm bottoms, not the pipe thread size which I guess is half inch? Kevin

Hi Kevin. The early Champ #7's were 1/2" pipe. They didn't have any # on the porcelains, only referred to as #7 in the application guides of that period. The 18mm #7 came out about 1934, about 10 years later. Champ had very confusing numbering in the pre war period, that's only one example of many.
