I found this thread a little confusing since it started in 2009 but has been revived just recently.
But here goes:
Regarding "someone else's $$$ (but not much of it)":
If money IS an issue:
I put a Shooting Star (now Startechno) 2 axis DRO on my old US Machine Tool 8 X 36 vertical mill at least 15 years ago and it has worked without any problems at all ever since. Its resolution is 1/2 thou.

I bought my Newall from industry recycles on eBay for like $750. Brand new and works great.
