Default A.J Wilkinson Co. Planer 1880's

I thought I would share a couple pictures of a planer that I recently aquired for my collection... This Wilkinson Planer is a little different then some other examples I have seen ... The bridge of other Wilkinson planers that I have seen are flat on one side where a cast nameplate was attatched ... My bridge is decoratIve with no flat area... I believe this might be earlier but cannot be certain ... These planers were only built from 1880s to 1900... Does anyone have one similar with no provision for the tag ?

The 3 that are in my barn all have a flat side where the tag goes.1 of ours has a Chas A Strelinger & co.in place of the Wilkinson tag. It's on a marked Wilkinson base though.
Is the top casing on yours on backwards? Or just different.
Is there a ser. no. on it or just assembly no.s? Rob

Hi Rob,
The top is actually cast the same on both sides.... That is what makes me question weather it is an earlier design before they started casting one side flat to be able to place a makers tag? The only numbers I could find on the machine are the number 8 stamped in a few places for what looks to be assembly... And stamped on the top face of the clapper box is A.J Wilkinson Co. Makers Boston Mass. I remember you posting a picture of your planers ... If I remember right you had a few Wilkinsons and some other small planer??

Hi George, The other planer is a New Haven. It's a floor model. 3' table.Probably 1860's ish.The Wilk planers here don't have any ser. no.s just assembly no.s. The 3 are all slightly different from each other.Rob

It's all apart right now. I have a long list of roundtuit machine tools. Started working on an 1850's? Gould shaper in the fall but ran out of warm weather in the unheated barn. rob
